I just bought an 86 Samurai. Today I did a brake job , then replaced the bushing under the t case shifter. The after market bushing worked great but it revealed that I have no front wheel drive.I have 2 hi and 2 low but not front wheel action. I was wondering what might have broken. Has any of you rebuilt their own transfer case? Paging any zuki mechanic.. I am going to pull it tomorrow and open it up and see if one of the forks are broken. Have any of you ever heard of shelling the gears? Everything is stock. Also do any of you have a good source of a gently used stock, or a rebuilt AND reasonably priced transfer cases. Thanks in advance for your replies.

If you have Free Wheeling Hubs then make sure that they are working before you tear the tcase apart.

Yes on 86 sammy. I had the vehicle on a two post lift and the front drive shaft was not turning in any shift position. The rear drive shaft turned in all shoft positions. BTW, the Hubs are locked..

did you make sure that the hubs were locked? that is a good place to start

just take the small front case off of the t-case first (the one behind the front drive line flange) and go from there, but see if you have the shifter in correctly first if you shifter does not go from side to side a couple of inches you missed the front fork rod.

When I got this sammy, you could not move the tfer case stick but a couple of inches. I pulled the shifter and installed a poly bushing. I had to line up the knoches so the shifter would move side to side. I have everything installed correctly from the shifer stand point . There was no bushing at all in the shifter neck, only a small o ring. I am wondering if this model uses the thick poly bushing that is sold .
I have noticed a number of comments concerning the hubs. If the transfer case does not turn the front drive shaft , which mine does not, then it is does not matter if the hubs are locked . My problm is in the case. I am going to pull the case tomorrow and front half it and see what the problem is.
