Yes, the 1.3 V6 had only one front wheel.

1.3 V6???  Huh?

I think 1.3L or V-6. I believe that all of the Pre-Grand Vitara (USA) were all the same, but all I have owned have been 1.6L (99, 97, 89)

yeah i think its true all the casings are the same ,

I have seen a diffence in drive shaft length , I have measured a 22 spline 1990 drivers front axle against a 26 spline 2000 and there is a bit of difference,

Anyone know what 26 spline i can get that is the same length as the 1990 22spline mainly the part that goes into the casing

A 96 would do it.  I got mine from Hawk, when I went to 26 spline.

Mark,
Housings,
are all the same dimensions whether they be the 1.3 to the V6, alloy or steel they are identical other than a few extra bolt holes.

Axles,
from what I found after climbing over 20 or so G/Vs,Vits and Escudos is the easiest way to find that  26 short axle is to first look and see if the trucklet if fitted with Free wheeling hubs (they can be ether manual or autos). The short axle is only fitted to trucklets with FWH's ! I'd say if you find some thing post '95ish with FWH's it will have the right type of axle.

The one I found was from a late '90 diesel Vit so check them out too.

cheers shane , I got to the point where i was fitting my axle back in with the New ARB in it , I ordered a 2000 drivers cv and found it to be a little too long.

So it looks like i need a pre 96 will ask the breaker to compare it as he lives about 300 miles away and sends stuff to me ,

??? Normally the short axle  diff's runs with the long splined version R/H C/V and you'd only use a short type C/V with an air actuated diff (G/V style).

So your saying that a long splined R/H C/V won't work with you ARB either   ??? ??? ???

Is this the problem your talking about ?

I measured the ARB against the stock diff and the ARB is in the same place as the stock, Measure where the circlip sits and the 2000 drivers cv/axle sits about 1/4 of an inch out when the circlip is in position probably less.  Measure the 2000 agasint the 1990 and there is around 1/4 inch difference.

so reading above i thought maybe a slight defference in an earlier one compared to my 2000 one

Mark,
Do you want me to measure them both up for you so can compare them ?

yeah could you do that please mate,  are the overall lengths the same?

No, the G/V one is shorter overall, As it's 10.PM here I'll go out first thing in the morning and do it then.

Shane mate, yeah dont worry when you can,

My second plan is to make a rubber bush to sit in the gap that fits over the shaft as the stock seal isnt great and this would make a pretty good seal.
I have some pretty big round bushes that i can drill the center out to make them fit over and sit nicely in the cv cup.  What do you think.

I will take a couple of pics tonight to better explain.

OK,
Escudo is 38mm spline and overall 103mm from the end to the cup.

G/V air diff is 34mm spline and overall 96mm from the end  to the cup.

I remembered seeing this http://www.yac.com.tw/cvj/cvj.htm and went searching for it this morning (thats why I took sooo long ::)) but unfortunately they only list outers, Still a good reference though.

Mark,
Heres the chassis # of the Diesel Vitara of which I took the steel diff with 26 spline carrier out of. Your Suzuki dealer should be able to use it as a reference for the correct C/V and axle for the steel housing.

Thats handy mate, thank you ,

Been out side with the tape measure and got a mate to do the same,   There is a difference in the length of the splined shaft like your pcitures shows. My year 2000 shaft I have is about 1/4 inch longer hence why it doesnt go all the way in.

Tomorrow I will be knocking up a bush to go in to act as a stop and a seal . will make it larger so its a nice tight fit and i will take it for a run , will take some pics and post them tomorrow

How did you go?

I have done the bush seems to be fine didnt get any probs jacking it up so it was under different compressions. took it out for a test run still fine.

After that and some concerned mates i thought I will hunt down the proper shaft this week as to cause damage to the ARB wouldnt be good.

Hey Mark,
I priced up an inner axle from the chassis # above as a spare today NZ$263.40 (92.52 GBP) also out of curiosity got a price for R/H inner C/V NZ$636.86 (240.51 GBP)  :o
Steel diff housing NZ$780.80 ( 294.87 GBP)   :o :o
No price on the 3Rd member.
These are all genuine Suzuki parts.

You got any prices to compare ??

HI Shane, the Breakers charge £275 - £300 for a complete steel axle. Not sure on zuki prices but I know the drive shafts werent cheap, had a quote for £60 for a second hand one but im probably going to visit one as to measure the length as looking at your pics i might need the short one, but im yet to see a Mk1 26 spline to compare it with.

Well after some drive shaft issues and lots of head scratching I took my axle to the breakers yard tried about 20 shafts and still had probs with length and the diff locking if it went into far.

I took it to My mate Jon (abit of a guru) as he had Nicks front ARB on the bench fitting it into the a steel casing.

After comparing both diffs for some time we spotted that the sleeve or housing where the drivers axle/shaft goes in was the wrong diameter and was causing the diff to lock .  finally foudn the problem!!!

Looks like my ARB must have been number 500 on the machine and the bits most have been worn.

Bascially I have to finish it off tonight but I have to skim it down about 3 thau to enable it to all fit in correctly as on slightly out.

Cheers guys ,Mudfkr for all the help . pics etc.  Will be out on sunday to give it a proper test run will have some pics.
