Title: Pictures from Jeff's first Daniel Boone Adventure Tour You MUST do this!!
Post by: Quaddawg on June 04, 2006, 11:59:43 PM
Our own Jeff|removethispart|@theQuadShop  guides a tour of the Daniel Boone National Forest

It is part of Sam Correro's Trans America Tour develped for dual-sport Motorcycle enthusiasts.

read more about it here:  http://www.transamtrail.com/

Jeff has mapped out a route for 4x4 street legal vehicles. You may have read about it in the other thread.

This is a set of pictures and some stories from the first official

Daniel Boone Adventure Tour

;D ;D ;D

Folks, if you are within reasonable driving distance of Central Kentucky, you HAVE to join us for one of these adventures!  Read the other thread on this tour for Jeff's recommendations and comments, but for me, I can tell you just about any 4 wheel drive vehicle can make this trip. I suggest a set of decent all terrain or more aggressive tires, but we did take the Mighty Stock Tracker (Scott!) and it made all but a single hole, and 30 seconds of the dreaded "Strap!" and we were on our way again!

I told Jeff that this was my single most enjoyable off-road outing of my life, guys, I am 44 and have been riding bikes, driving Jeeps and generally "getting in the woods with fossil fuels" for over 40 years. It wasn't the hardest wheeling I've done, not by a long shot, but something about the combination of good people, good vehicles (SUZUKI!) and great scenery made it something special.  This tour has the potential to expand, grow, change into one of the premier excursions in the midwest!

The red stock Tracker with STREET tires did AWESOME!!   He aired it down pretty good, and he only had to be tugged through ONE hole. He also had to take off before we got to Livingston, but still, all in all, it did incredibly.

The red Sammy had clutch problems, the clutch would NOT disengage. He drove that little thing over a couple hundred miles of trails with NO CLUTCH!!

I have never seen anything like it. He didn't quit, whine or go home, he just put it in gear, started it, and CRAMMED it into whatever gear he needed. I thought it would come apart at any minute, but it never did, he even rock crawled the ledges at Livingston WITH NO CLUTCH!!!  Once, they stopped on a hill, and his starter wouldn't quite start the Sammy, AND pull him up the hill, so I pushed him from behind and he was able to get it started..

He pretty much had to run stop signs, but he never quit. My hat goes off to anyone with the drive to finish a two day excursion through mud and rock and paved roads with no clutch. I wouldn't have done it.

He even pulled the tranny out at camp Saturday night, and tried to fix the throwout bearing, but it didn't work, so he had to do another 100 miles or so on Sunday... I still can't get over it.

Jeff's  Diesel Sammy is just awesome, words can't really describe how nice that rig was..  it hurt me to see it laying on it's side (check the pics)

The silver Sammy with the 33 swampers on it was wild looking. We had never met Mike before or seen his rig,  we passed him on the way down, on I-75. (see photo of it on the road) I guessed he was coming too, and sure enough, when we met at the Hardees at exit 90, there he was... it was neat.

All in all we had 9 rigs, from bone stock with street tires, all the way to Jeff's Turbo Diesel Sammy, and everything between.  The route was part of the TransAmerican Trail, as Jeff posted on the other thread.  It is not a challenging route for the most part, just very fun, and very scenic. The breaks from trail, to gravel to a bit of paved road are welcome, you get some of everything on this trip, and stocks rigs can make it with a little help.

If you like, there are mud holes, and more challenging obstacles at a few places, but most have fairly eash bypasses.

My favorite was Livingston, I had never crawled the Tracker over rocks or ledges, and it was neat to see others do it first, so I could give the Turtle (My Tracker) the chance to do new stuff.  The rock at Livingston has a TON of traction, and the little Turtle went just about everywhere I pointed it.  Ground clearance didn't hurt me a bit, as a matter of fact, at the section where Jeff lightly rolled his (no spotter for the lead dog!) my low center of gravity was an absolute boon.

Also, once again, the importance airing down showed up well. The fellow in the red Sammy, just wouldn't air down his tires, he didn't want to deal with the soggy feeling on road.. and yeah, he had trouble, he was locked front and rear, and couldn't make lines that my Tracker walked right up, especially on the rocks, he spun quite a bit.  I am sure with his OTHER tires, ones he does air down, he would have ruled me, but not in this case...  Even the big silver Sammy had a little trouble doing what the Turtle would do.  As a matter of fact, the red Tracker, with street tread, low pressure, WALKED a few hills that Jeff and Mike  spun a bit on, I attribute that to the low pressure in the street tires, allowing them to "key" better than thier large tires. Even though both of them aired down, they weren't squatting much at all, and the street tires were.  Amazing really.  Narrow tires at low pressure  do conform better than wide tires, just like the article I found and posted several times here.

One Isuzu and the Yota ended up breaking CV's and finished the run with one wheel drive.. yeah, they had to be tugged up the staircase, but they made everything else!!

We are planning to do this again in the fall, and I urge ANYONE stock or built to sign up and COME ON DOWN!!!   Just make sure your rig is street legal, street safe and reliable!!

what a great time was had by all!!

This was the only time on the trip that Scott (stock tracker) had to take the strap. I'm so impressed that I am now on the hunt for a 4 door Trackick!

I have been there a couple of times and it never gets old  8) Do you have a map somewhere of the route you took to cover that much distance on trails? Or where you started/ended up???? I was thinking Bigh South Fork to Livingston, or Windrock to Livingston???

Even tho we stopped at Livingston, I have it mapped to the BigSouth fork area. I am looking into tying it into Royal Blue and Harlen.

I have the route we took, tracked out on GPS in Mapsource file format, if anyone wants to take a look at it.  It shows from the TrailHead Jeff picked, to Livingston, and then has the freeway ride back to Richmond.

PM me if you want it.

That looks like a blast.  Nice pictures.  :)

Does everyone have the grill conversions on their Sammies?  If you guys really want a 1.0L motor we can make it happen.  :D

Now I want to go exploring in my Tracker...

Here is The map of the run, downloaded from my GPS

uh, it's really too small to see.......lol..

But here is a link to a larger picture
http://www.forumsigs.com/users/quaddawg605/Daniel_Boone_Adventure_Tour/DBATroute.jpg

For those familiar with the area,  Richmond is upper left, with 75 running south in blue.

Our route is yellow, and runs from near Slade in the upper right, to the 909 area (49'er, Livingston, etc...) in the lower left..

How likely is damage to occur with a stock vehicle on this trail?  I don't like to take my Tracker very far from home.  Just not comfortable enough for a long drive.  My wife's 2002 Montero Sport is what I am thinking of.  It has a regular 4 high/low setup with 31 inch tires stock.  It has 9 inches of ground clearance and has Dueler Revo's on it.  How likely is it to get damaged?  I would remove the side steps before doing it.

Also how long does the trail take to run?  Is it all driving or do people stop to chat much?  I'm wondering how a 3 year old would do on it (not driving  ;D).

I'm hearing the Arch trail at Slade is to be closed by the end of June.  :'(  Hope they stop there.

Keith, I think we could tear up the Montero.. LOL..

Seriously, I am not sure I would take that nice of a vehicle..  Most of the way it would be fine, but certain sections near Natural Bridge, you DO have to climb a little. And at 909, you could just park it.. that section where where Jeff tipped would definitely scratch you up, with one false move.  I think most folks added a little damage to their vehicles, so I would call trail damage LIKELY.

As far as a 3 year old.. I think it he would be fine. Can you tow the Tracker with the Montero? That would be the solution I think.

We do stop quite a bit, maybe more than some liked, but it was just right for me. I like to drive, take a break, and drive some more. We could have gone a lot further with less breaks, but heck, I liked it fine that way we did it.

We were in the trucks for 12 hours the first day, but less on Day 2.

Thanks for the info.  I need to look into a tow bar setup.  How do you tow your Tracker?  On a trailer or flat.  If flat how did you rig the tow bar set up?

I've been going there since the mid 80's. Its actually half the size now than it was back then. No problems getting lost. Yes, a couple guys climbed pink rock.

I've heard that they have now closed that first trail that we ran.  :'( I may have to go do some more scouting and find a new legal way through there.
