Title: will 8v crank work in 1.6 16v obd1 engine?
Post by: mcs on June 06, 2006, 11:58:49 AM
I need to know if a 92 tracker 8v crank will swap right into a 94 sidekick 16v engine. Also does anyone know if the 16v engines are interference enignes.

1. Maybe/Probably.  But not as well.  While the block may be the same on both an 8 and 16v, I don't think the guts are.  So I wouldn't recommend it.

2. No -- as long as the engine has stock pistons.

If I recall the 16V crank was double weighted...or something along those lines, and some other minor changes...

I was going to make my 8v block into a 16v, and it will work, but it is optimal to have the proper crank etc

The cranks fit the same, but the 16V is a double
counterweight where the 8V is a single, I don't
think there is a difference in the weight, but double
weights will flex the crank less under high RPM use

The 16V is not an interference engine, others have
debated this, but I tested it with a 95 16V, pistons up
and rotated the camshaft, no hitting.
