Cheapest route is usually to find a local wrecked Tracker or Sidekick with a good motor, for sale.

There needs to be a 1.3L DOHC on the west coas >:(
As far as a cheap 1.6L, the u-pull-it / junk yards are going to be the cheapest for JUST a working motor.
If you want to get A/C, Fuel Injection, Power Steering etc - I strongly suggest you buy a Sidekick / Tracker / Esteem and use it as a doner vehicle. You can buy one for less than all the individual parts will end up costing you. You can part out the rest of the bits you don't want, and even take some thing you may need (wheel lockers etc) in the future. Then, sell the body to a salvage yard. Some people have acutally MADE money doing this after parting out their doner vehicle.

if your planning on adding performance parts the 1.3l DOHC motor is a way better platform than the 1.6l tracker motors, and the aftermarket support for the G13B is also superior :P

From what i get off google.com the 1.3 dohc has 100hp/83lbft ( unkown rmp range) while the 1.3 sohc from sammy has 69bhp/76lbft at 6000rpm/3500rmp . Is this correct? if so i don't see why ppl down the dohc so much for torque.

I think a lot of people confuse power at low rpm with torque (certainly in the UK). The DOHC has a lot more torque but less low down power. The Jimny engine (G13BB) and the Vit 1.6 8V (G16A) both make 80bhp, the 1.6 is much better (easier to drive) off road as it makes its power and torque around 1000rpm lower.
