It is a standard cable, similar to what I have on my 72 datsun so I don't see why not.

Cable tech dosen't seem to have progressed to much  :P

It should have some play in it, now you've got me a bit confussed lol.

I will ahve to look at mine, and sadly mine is out on a project for the indeffinate future.

My other car (Datsun) you can pull it out as far as you want....at the risk of not getting it back in.

Has the cable been giving you any problems?
Why do you feel you need to grease it?

MY only broke as I put a sharp angle in the line after taking the cluster out...then I had to replace it lol

I agree with him, I got mine for my '96 (which is a bit$% to remove thanks to the new dash) from the local Chevy dealer for $45.  Relatively cheap and hey, for some cussing and scraped up hands it fixed the problem permanent.

Word of advice, skip the parts store cables as they're universal and also you might want to fire a little lube down the cable when you first install it.  A cable for a Geo Tracker might have been sitting on the shelf for years so the grease has set or moved within the cable.  Mine squeaked a bit at first and then it started to go away.  I shot some old "household oil" I inherited from my grandfather down the cable and haven't heard a noise since. 8)
