Title: My hood flew open
Post by: keith on June 14, 2006, 08:17:01 PM
Today I checked my oil before leaving on a short trip.  I got about a mile from home and was going about 40 mph when my hood flew open and blocked the entire view out the windshield.  Luckily no one was around me.  I pull to the side of the rode and was able to latch the hood latch down.  I think the cable just didn't spring back completely when I closed the hood after checking the oil.  Both hood hinges are broken now and the hood is bent a bit.  I was able to order a set of hinges from Hawk for $10 each.  I just drove the Tracker home and parked it because I was leaving town for a few days.  I'll see if I can just bolt on the new hinges and bend the hood a bit.  I've read of this happening to at least one other member and wonder how common it is.

Happened to me too.  I had painted my kick and had disconnect the hood latch.  I forgot to bolt the hood latch backin.  I drove to my girlfriends a good 10 min trip no problems.  I drove over to my buddy's and I must have been doing 60 all of a sudden the hood flew up crack the windshield and stayed there i drove with my head out the window and turned into my buddies got out picked the hood up, broke both hinges. Crushed the hood shattered the windshield.  So yeah I know where you are coming from.  Not too fun of an ordeal.

I noticed in mine.  the hood latch in the glove compartment sticks open.  Every time i popped the hood i got into the habit of pushing the latch handle back in, otherwise the hood wouldn't lock down.  Lukily I never had it come open while driving.

I agree with the hood pin idea, possibly even ditching the latch all together. hood pins are cheap and very reliable.. lol

I will keep that in mind, I would be pissed if that happened to me

I never did trust the hood latch on the Goblin, especially when on the road the hood would shimmy in the wind really bad. I slapped on a pair of hood pins and never looked back. The only downside reared it's ugly head when I burried the Goblin in thick mud half-way up the headlights and had to pop the hood to plug in the winch control cable. This required some bumper scrambling to reach both pins to get the hood open, then I found out the fan was throwing a fountain of water directly in line with the winch solenoid box ::)... LOL!

A couple of weeks ago I had to take my latch off and lube it because it was sticking. A shot of penetrating oil up the cable helps too.

the dude who took his latch off to save weight cut his rear tow hook off to save weight as well.. lol. he also removed his back bumper. when it came time to pull a grand cherokee out he hooked to the rear cross member which he swears is a bumper and tweaked the hell otu of it. that thing looked funny after that. he didn't get the jeep out by the way. he plasma cut the cross member off the next day in metal shop class and soon after welded a piece of rectanguar tubing on to have a bumper/cross member combo even though he thinks it's only a bumper

I got the new hinges today and put them on.  The odd thing is that the base of the hood now rubs on the plastic piece at the base of the windshield where the water jets are.  I have to push down the hood to clear it.  The edges of the hood don't close flush like they used to.  I am going to look into getting some hood pins.

Darn,  wish I would have known...  I was just at my house yesterday, and I could have given you a set of hinges...   ...nice pink ones...

They came with the hood I bought last year...  When I junk yard, I leave as much attached to the parts I buy as I can get away with.

Unfortunately, I am back in Ohio now, and I can't get to them...

unless your hood is pretty messed up I bet the hood just isn't alighned correctly making it hit the plastic dinger. my friend's cherokee does it since he hasn't put the time into alighning his hood yet. (had to put the one off his totaled comanche on cause he wrecked, odly enough the manche's hood was in perfect condition)

yea, just loosen the bolts that hold it on and try moving it up... it's tricky
