Title: Strut Help
Post by: hap on June 16, 2006, 07:43:36 PM
Started my spacer install this weekend and have run into a problem. After removing the bolt for the upper strut mount and lowering the strut something broke. If you look at the pic below it shows the strut with the rubber isolator? attached to it. I think this was supposed to stay attached to the vehicle and not the strut. Does anyone have any hints on getting this piece off the strut without breaking it?

heat it up with a torch and gently try to pry it off. or you can just soak it in penatrating oil to get it off. you will need to buy a new upper strut mount though.

be very careful about heating it up with a torch. I have heard that shocks are likely to explode when heated. they mentioned it on an automotive show and my dad mentioned it as well

I don't think I would heat it

I would just buy a new piece from a wrecking yard. Call hawk. he has everything.. I really don't think those two pieces are suposed to come apart. I could be wrong though. I wrecked that exact rubber piece installing struts before.

We ended up very carefully taking the grinder to it. Came off fairly easy with no damage to the strut. Spent a hour on the phone Sat. morning trying to find new mounts. Drove 3 hour round trip to get them and had everything finished up Sat night.
