Look Guys this tricking is driving me crazy
about a month ago I put a head on my tracker that i pulled off of another tracker. the head had just been rebuilt about 2 weeks before the tracker it came off of was wrecked. Now eversince I put this head on I have noticed a ticking espectially when i push in the clutch to shift gears So I was going to adjust the valve lash even though the mechanic that installed the new head on the other tracker said that he had adjusted them when he installed the head. Well I have never adjusted valves before but someone told me that if it is valve ticking that the ticking would be louder with the valve cover off, so i took the valve cover off and started the truck and not only was the ticking not any louder it didnt sound like it was coming from the valves at all (although I did notice that the intake valves pumped alot more oil than the exhaust...is this normal) It almost sounds like the ticking is coming from the intake manifold?? What gives? The ticking seems to get worse after it warms up. also like I said before I can hear the ticking espacially when i push the clutch in to shift gears and I can hear it over the radio and the swampers
anyone got any ideas??

I think what you are describing is actualy known as a ping, but in these lil sewing machines it does sounds alot like a lifter, check your timing, you had to of pulled it to do head, maybe not where it should be? 8)

Do you live close to any terrorists. Maybe they installed a time bomb in there?
Someone mentioned the other day that the injector/injectors can tick pretty loud. They're on the intake side. Just a suggestion.
Pinging is always a culprit too. Does it go away with revs?

I'm going to vote for ping (aka pre-ignition) too ... the "espectially when i push in the clutch" symptom makes me think the ECM or something may be advancing it just that bit more to make the pre-ignition worse ...
My guess, the timing belt is off a tooth from when the head was installed (cause I've never got my 8V + auto to ping by advancing the timing via the dist ...)
Oh, and try a tank of premium ... splurge and spend the extra $3 for tankful :)

My '96 also has a "tick" that sounds just like a lifter, but it doesn't seem to change with engine speed. Still haven't been able to track it down, but it isn't a lifter, or "ping" (preignition). If I figure it out, I'll let you know...

well checked and adjusted the valves.....no change and the timing is dead on
any other ideas

noisey injector? maybe,, they make alot of noise

I had an old V8 Olds several years back that had a loose spark plug and the compression leaking around it sounded just like a bad lifter. I don't know if you already said or not, but does it do it only under acceleration or all the time (once it's warm)? If it does it at an idle the it is definitely not pinging...

maybe a piston rod knock? if it is and it's that loud you shouldn't drive it till you eliminate the problem. if it is a rod knock which I hope it isn't you'd want to stop driving it to avoid the risk of shooting a roc through the block. once you do that the block is worthless.
don't know what it is but I'd be careful in case that's it.

My bet is exhaust leak, or more likely an injector, or the vacuum switch on the intake manifold (not sure what it is called, but the one on my Metro sounds just like a lifter, or noisey injector)
Feel around the modules installed on your intake, the one making the noise can be felt to vibrate in time to the ticking. If you find a switch is ticking, remove the wire connector from it and see if it stops.... The idle can be erratic without it connected though. I still haven't broken down and gotten an OEM FSM for my Tracker or my Metro, so I am a little blind on the various modules and switches, when it comes to actual names and functions. The one on the G13 is next to a vacuum switch also. Not sure on the G16

well sean devinney told me that i had to either adjust it hot or cold (not warm like i did) I didnt know that readjusted it today HOT and viola no more ticking

probably just is a valve adjustment then. I would bet anyway
