I had a couple of diff air intake set-ups on my 8v kick. but my 16V has two sensors a mass airflow and air temp will the cone filter mess with anything or should I just get a K&N put it in the box and forget about it. If any one has pics of 16V with cone filter send them my way..
-
There are a couple shots in the archive of people using a cone filter with the 16V, I can't find them at the moment though.
I ended up just going with a standard K&N to avoid water splash damage to the engine. :)

heres a pic of my old 98 tracker with calmini header and cone filter...

Do a search, we've discussed this several times.
-
Did a search did not come up with much i'll just give it hell and see what comes up any other help or info would be great thanks
-
Do a search for cone filter and my name. It was discussed less than a month ago and I did my setup about 3 months ago. I can also think of three of us with similar setups off of the top of my head.
HINT: Check out my CarDomain site.

One more thing is there to much HOT air getting sucked into the cone since it is the engine compartment and not sucking fresh air from out side
-
Some will tell you it's too much hot air but honestly I don't think so. I left the ducting that runs up on the fender well in place so it's shooting cold air at the filter and meanwhile the filter is sucking in LOTS more air than the stock setup does. Yes, it's hot/warm air but it's a much larger quantity of air.

hey AJM is it worth the time to do this mod i saw your post it looks easy enough no negitives to doing if not what the hell..
-
Once it stops raining I will get started i will post some info on how it went and how it works thanks for your help
-
did you get my PM?
I sent it to you as soon as you posted this query

The best all around setup for this (as to avoid water from rain or heavy off-roading to damage engine, as well as a great location for the filter to suck in cooler air.)
Buy the K&N drop in filter.
take out the bottom bucket from the air box.
take a hole saw and cut into any side of the bottom bucket.
then take a jigsaw and cut out the whole side, then do the same on the next side....continue doing this till all 4 walls of the bucket are cut out and all that is left are tha 4 corners (for support)
bolt the bottom bucket back into it's position on the fender.
drop in the K&N
close the top part of the air box back up
.....and ta-da, intake.
no monkeying around with the MAF or 02 sensors or anything....it's all stock.

I guess I'm missing something...how would that stop water from getting to the filter? Sounds like you just completely opened up the bottom of the box. ???

personally I wouldnt call it the best (imho)
but its def one way to do it
(i think i have that way listed down somewhere)
=D
-
does anny one make a snorkel for the trackkicks wouldent that be the best of both worlds
-
ARB has one but it isn't cheap. Couple hundred easy. Lots of people have made home made setups though.
-
i had a home made snorkel on my 8v came out damn nice if i must say so my self its for sale if any one wants along with an 8v header (calmini) like new. well any way put on the cone took about 15 to 20 min cake runs good so far thought it was sputtering a bit but here are some pics did it just like AJM said, thanks for the help..

wheres the IAT
-
the AIT is in the back of the air filter drilled it out and screwed it in look for the big blue blob on back used the blue to fix hole I made in side when drilling sh&t. what a big difference sound and maybe power not sure yet but for the time it took it was great mod. now I need to open up the exhaust.

I only say it's the best because it requires the least amount of work to accomplish what you need. And you don't need to fuss with anything sensor wise. It's all pretty much stock. And as for keeping water out...that's just common sense. I didn't think i needed to be so literal. No it won't "keep" water "out" but the air filter is much better protected from the elements in the Airbox with this set up than it is with an open cone filter sitting under the hood.
But of course if you go through a small river it's all a bad idea. But for rain and puddle jumping i believe my idea is the safest way...and you still get the benefits of an open element intake.
