Title: What Rack&Pinion assemblies interchange between models and years?
Post by: truckasaurus44 on June 25, 2006, 11:01:26 PM
I've got a 2000 Tracker 2dr 4cyl in desperate need of a Rack & Pinion.  I've found decent deals on units made for V6 trackers and Various Vitaras on ebay.  Did all the gen-2 trackers/vitara's use the same rack&pinion setup, allowing me to pick from a wide variety of donors.....or do I need cough up some serious green in order to get the exact unit for my truck?

Tried www.car-part.com ?  If it lists different vehicles in the family and over the 6 years they made these things you should be okay.  If it only lists your vehicle and your year then you know different.  Check over a large area though, there might not be many wrecked vehicles in your area.

I've checked the Suzuki Parts Catalogue for the US, and all the Cami-built Vitaras and GVs 99-03 use the same part 4850-67D51.  The part changed for the 04 model year.  So it's surely going to be the same for Trackers.

Not sure if this helps or not, but when I did the XL-7 into Tracker motor swap, the V6 moved the power steering pump from one side of the engine to the other.  Which meant I had to switch the hoses over.  Except the hoses on the XL-7 used banjo fittings, whereas the Tracker's had flare nut fittings.  So I tried swapping out just the top of the rack (where the hoses attach), but, of course, the two tops were not interchangeable at all.  Outwardly, very similar, but internally, no-can-do.  Tried to work out if V6 Tracker's (from the same CAMI assembly line as mine) hoses would have the right fittings, but the documentation was iffy and I didn't have time to go rummaging around junkyards, nor did I feel like ordering and returning parts 'til I got it right.

Ended up taking the entire steering rack/hubs/a-arm assembly from the XL-7.  It bolted right in, even lining up with the steering column perfectly.

Bottom line, the Japanese-built truck's rack's parts were not interchangeable with my CAMI Tracker's, but the entire unit was.

The Cami-built XL-7s use a different unit to the Cami-built GVs/Vitaras.
