I've seen it done with PVC pipe.

I have an article on fitting a Safari snorkel on my site under 'mods'/'snorkel'. The Safari snorkel isn't cheap but IMHO it is worth the money, well designed and VERY strong.

LOL,  I watched that auction on ebay too and download all the pics from it.
