Got a 40 channel CB for free brand new. But it needs an antenna. Any recomendations on the type or brand of antenna?
-
get one that's really flexible with an adjustable end so you can get optimal range and durability
don't think brand really matters

I was thinking about getting on that transmits through glass like this one.

Any thoughts on a magnetic / clip-on? We have theft issues here, so I want to pull mine inside when not in use.
-
I was also considering a magnetic one. Where do you run the wires out of though.
-
4 foot firestick, very nice ant...
-
I have yet to see a through-glass style one that was worth anything. They're junk.
Don't expect a magnet mount style to stay with you in the woods. Plus if you have a soft top, where would you stick it? The hood?
Best bet would be a hard-mount style with a spring base, flexible whip and tunable tip...
If you're worried about theft, just unscrew the mast/spring from the base and stick it inside when not in use... Just be sure to put it back before trying to use the CB... transmitting without an antenna hooked up can damage some cbs...

Know of any sites I can get one for a fair price.
-
Truck stops and travel centers are actually pretty good places to find all kinds of CB equiptment.
-
Truck stops, Ebay.
Firesticks RULE..
get a spring!!!!! I broke two good antennas before I broke down and bought a spring.
-
if you get a flexible antenna you don't need a spring, it's firesticks and other stiff ones like that where you need a spring

i agree, i have a super flexy one form a local truck shop. mine is tuned at almost as perfect as they come as well. ;D

I've put one of these http://www.firestik.com/Catalog/e36.htm through it's paces ...
I get a good SWR outta the box, and have BASHED it into low branches, etc and not been a problem. (there's also a 48" version).
I mount mine up center on roof or targa ...

Trying to get some off the loose ends tied up before Gon Zukin'.
I finally purchased an antenna: Firestik
High performance CB antenna kits complete with a 3 foot antenna, and a 3-way mounting bracket that will allow you to mount the antenna on a vertical or horizontal mirror arm or rail as well as directly to any flat vertical surface. The kits also includes an 18 foot Fire-Flex cable made from top grade RG-58A/U coaxial cable complete with two screw-on PL-259 connections. And, as a bonus for purchasing a complete kit, we throw in a FREE stainless steel spring and a FREE microphone hanger.

This morning I bought a antenna, fire extinguisher, and ARB snatch strap.
Bye Bye Paycheck :-\

Nice, now you just need to mount it. :)
I tried putting mine on the side of the SJ, but I broke off the first cheapo radio shack antenna I had on there. So I moved it to the back corner instead, right next to the tailgate. I haven't had a problem with it there since, but the range is a bit more limited then with a higher mounting point.
-
Yeah i got to mount it somewhere (possibly on the spare tire rack) and run all that wire. I am good a running wire (did a lot of care stereos) but man is it time consuming.
-
I've found the tail gate as a good area.
it won't get knocked by branches.
-
you need to remember that the aerial transmits in a cone, like a partially open umbrella ( with the handle at the top) so anything in the way like spare wheels will take a bite out of that transmission;
roof is best!
-
HotRod, That is nice clean install. Good spot for it too. Thanks

mine's on my roof basket angled a little back. other than the angle I'd say it's the best spot possible. doesn't work too bad. I need to adjust my adjustable antenna though. I have a non-adjustable one I got for free on it right now just because I felt like giving it a try

Roof mount would make it too tall.
Besides, i heard as long as it's atleast a foot over your roof line, you should be good.
Or that could just be a theory(sp?)
