Title: Wheeling far from home concerns.

I'm debating going to Zukimelt on Saturday.  It is a 3.5 hour trip for me each way.  My being gone for the whole day is a bit of a hardship for my wife and son.  My other concern is what happens if I break something at the melt that I need to get home?!  I went 2 years ago for the day and had no problems.  I only went on the green trails.  I did have a monstor headache from the drive home when I got home.  Other than trailering to events, how do you guys that drive to events deal with the problem of getting home if you have issues?

i carry a few extra parts, a good tool kit, and some extra fluids whenever i go far away from home or into a place with no cell coverage. i carry an extra alt belt, front and rear driveshafts, some vulcanizing tape(for hose repairs) and some wire.

One huge advantage to going to the Melt (or any other Suzuki based ride) is there will be people with spare parts everywhere. If you take a few of the basics that you have, you should be able to find just about any thing else while you are there. So load up the tool kit and go have a good time.(and watch out for that deep mud on the Orange trail  ;) )

COME ON DOWN!  If you break, we will get you back on the road!!  At least good enough to get home..


And you might want to avoid the Orange trail all together...   ;D


I just finished it, and it's fun!!!  The "turtle" did it just fine, even as low as it is..   BUT, It would have been easy to break something on the rock section.. All I broke was a mirror.. whew...lol..

i'm going saturday  ...like all these guy said ..  bring extra parts ,tools,and fluids .
i'm 4hrs from home and i'm not going to   go crazy on the trails(i bet you i won't) .. know the limit of your truck
plus alot of people on here seem real nice to give you parts to get back home .
my friend(hman) is trailering his so if i break  we robbing his parts  ;D

There are a lot of good helpful people at the 'Melt. 

Last year when we broke a clutch cable, Murph loaned us a Zuk to run to Lafayette to get a new one, and Larry Harris helped me get it adjusted.  The people are great, and there is a lot of help around. 

If you really break bad, I'm sure Badlands will let you leave the truck there until the following weekend, and you can come back with a trailer or towbar.

...and, as they said in the Gumball Rally, when somebody asked if there was "a place you could get a car around here"...   ..."Hey, this is America..."

top 4 things you can do when you break down far from home.

1.  Find out from other locals at the event about where there is a good local shop if you break

2. Bring the title so you can sell it on the spot!

3.  You can rent a Uhaul car carrier trailer and drag it home cheaper than having a tow truck take it home.

4.  douse it with gas a brun it on the spot.
