does it go right in? same gearing etc? if so I am pissed I kept my retarted vacuum actuated stock 3rd in when I took the whole thing apart a week or so ago.
if it goes right in perhaps one day I'll do that and get a locker for it. who knows

4.875 gears are not available on Sidekicks, so if you have an auto the gearing does not work. If you have a 5spd you should keep the steel thrid and swap gears instead.
Also I have seen mixed reviews on whether or not you need to create a hybrid CV shaft. Some people have found the inner stub to be the same length, other (like the article) said that it was shorter to accomadate the shift-on-the-fly.

last I checked my GV has 5.12 gears stock like a kick. that's what calmini said they had anyway. I have the 5 speed. not a fan of automatics at all. I thought track/kicks had cast iron 3rds and aluminum housings and GV's I know have cast iron housings and cast iron 3rds
ah, maybe a suzuki axle isn't worth investing in
I do think I need to get manual hubs though

4.875's were available for those outside North America ;D I have them in my 2.0 auto Kick.
The shift on the fly uses a slightly longer LHS inner axle shaft. If you can't find an earlier 26 spline shorter shaft you can trim the longer one down and put a new groove in it for the clip and it will be fine.

it's a 2000. calmini must be wrong if that's the case. I'll check what they said again. where did you find that info? I was feeling good about my gearing and now i feel like it sucks

Why? Now it means you have options like 4.6, 4.8 and 5.1 to play with if you run bigger rubber.

You need to go under your rig and check the ratio yourself to be sure.
I have found the following myself doing this:
99 2.5 V6 manual - 4.3:1
99 2.0 inline four manual - 4.6:1
95 2.0 V6 auto - 4.8:1
1600 16v Kicks ( manual and 4 spd auto's ) - 5.1:1
1600 8v kicks auto - 4.6:1 ( manuals 5.1:1 )
All the above are give or take a few .00:1 ratio's.
If you have the lower ratio diffs ( eg 4.3:1 ) then as cj says - BE VERY HAPPY ;D because you have so many options for bigger rubber without all the gearing head aches the 1600 guys have - 5.8 r&p's - GOOD LUCK!!!
My advice - check things out thoroughly for your self and then make a plan from there. People like the staff at Calmini try hard to help but the reality is that there is just too many variants for most of us to keep up with.
cj , the_maplebar , blacknight are very knowledgeable and always seem happy to help whenever they can but you need to take some initiative and do some groung work of your own.

I'll have to try that driveshaft number of turns. good to hear there are more options if it really is 4.3. I also feel better because my trans ratios are better than auto which makes me feel good about myself.
where would I find the stuff to regear the diffs? it seems easier to regear the T case but which is a better option and which is more cost effective?

Regearing for tire size should be done at the diff Less stress on the drive train. As for what R&P to use get a set from an auto 4.8 should be good for around 31s ;D Or if you want more work get sidekick 5.12's swap some stuff around and when you could run 33's :o

those are great ideas. I may just do that someday. so I can just get a ring and pinion for the front and rear out of an auto or kick and they just go right in? is that what is to be done? Now I'm a bit upset that my friend didn't say anything before he sent his totalled kick the the scrap yard. was going to get both thirds anyway

The R&P should be from a GV auto. To use sickick gears their is more stuff that needs to be done.

does anyone know if there is a way to use the existing air actuated diff and just engage it permanently? i've never seen one in person before, but i was thinking maybe it could be welded or a spacer made up to keep it engaged. anybody have any good pictures of what it looks like inside?
my '01 tracker is left with 2WD right now because of a faulty air pump and actuator switch - i'd like to get rid of the system to make it reliable.

my friend bought a camanche he's working on and it was like that. because manual hub conversons on those are so expensive he just got a new vacuum dinger. since it's pretty cheap for me to get manual hubs and I was wanting them anyway I would definately permanately engage my front diff to make it no retarted
blacknight, perhaps I could just do auto diff gears for a while. if kick gears take more stuff to make them work it's probably not worth it as 33's would probably kill the axles pretty quick. I think putting auto gears in these axles is all I would do to them and just run then till they snap and then get a ford 9 inch rear and figure out if I want to sas or dual control arm ifs... I have allot of time to think about it till I'll have the resources and funds to do that though
