Title: Gears
Post by: fullsink18 on July 26, 2006, 06:18:43 AM
I am having a hell of a time understanding all the gear ratios. (Sorry, used to cars with only tranny gears).  So let me ask some question and see if I can get my self straightned out.

1. What is the stock gear ratios of manual trans 94 kick?  Front diff, Transfer Case, Rear Diff

2. What is 10 bolt vs. 12 bolt? Which do I have?

3. If I add bigger tires what gears should I change?

4.What gear ratios are available for manual kick?

5. If I add lockers does this effect what gears are in my kick?

5. Anything else I should know?

I really appreciate anybody taking time to help me out.  I have learned alot from this site.

Here's a link to a listing of what gear ratios where in what models of Trackers/Kicks from the Zuwharrie site.

Ok so 5.12 is most likely my stock gear ratio.  Is this for the front or back diff or the transfer case.

front & back dif.  You shouldn't need to change any gears to run a tire up to around 31", maybe larger.  A locker does not effect your gears.

Alright, thanks that is one cloudy area that finally has some sun.  Now on to the transfer case.

EDIT: Found this:

Transmission     = 5 Speed Manual
Transfer Case    = Stock (Tracker T-Case HIGH Range = 1:1)
Ring and Pinion  = 5.12 (Stock Gears for 5 Speed Manual Trans)

So what is the 4 low range ratio?

the transfer case , in high range, is 1:1 straight thru. in low range it is (i beleive) is like 1.816:1
good luck

I should have read a bit farther instead of getting excited. I found the following:

Tracker 5 Speed Manual Transmission /T ransfer Case / Ring & Pinion Gearing Ratios
Gear ratios
   1st 3.65
   2nd 1.95
   3rd 1.38
   4th 1.00
   5th 0.86
   Reverse 3.67
Transfer gear ratios
   Low (4WD) 1.82
   High 1.00
Differential ratio 5.12

Question 1 is checked off.

As for Question 3 I think I should change my R&P to 5.83 for the 31 inch tires.  Right?

As for the rest of the questions keep the info coming.  Thanks

the 5.12s should handle 31" tires, but it cant hurt to switch to 5.83s

Yeah, i STILL don't know what the heck a 10-bolt and 12-bolt is???
or how you find out?
and i've been driving these things for almost 20 years.
weird.

Well I wont be getting 5.83s and time soon so 5.12 will have to handle the 31s.

Yeah, i STILL don't know what the heck a 10-bolt and 12-bolt is???

LOL
If I could figure out what I have that would be good to know.

Calmini's Site has this listed for their R&P Gears.
10 Bolt '89-'98 Front
12 Bolt '93-'98 Rear (discontinued)

So maybe I have a 10 bolt up front and a 12 bolt in the rear???

But there 12 bolt R&P is discontinued, so I need to find somewhere else to get those.  If indeed I have a 12 bolt.

To double check I can put the same locker in my kick with 5.12s or 5.83?

Question 1: Check
Question 3: Check

10-bolt/12 bolt refers to the number of bolts that hold the ring gear into the diffcarrier.

Yeah, and the poster has 12 bolt in the rear, and they AREN'T available.    Boondocks is/was going to order some.. but they haven't yet.

Good luck finding them.

My Kick was a DOG with heavy 31" tires and 5.12's  but others say different things.... I found a set of 5.62's by chance, and that made it quite a bit better.

Question 1: Check
Question 2: Check
Question 3: Check

Good News:
I starting to feel pretty smart on the subject.

Bad News:
Darn that figures the gears I need happen to be the hardest to find.

I assume that I have a 10 bolt front member.  But changing those gears only helps in 4 wd.

Question 4: Check
Question 5: Check

Well I am pretty good to go now.  As soon as I get some money saved up I will put my name on boondocks waiting list for the 5.83 R&P.

Thanks a ton to a great group of intelligent people.

Fronts are all 10 bolt.
