My 235/70/R16s rub slightly on the frame (back of tire...not front) when the steering is fully locked (forward or reverse)
Is there anything that can be done other than wheel spacers? I don't want a full inch of wheel spacing, as it is not rubbing very much.
Any suggestions or experience with this?
Thanks.

mine does the same, can't think of anything other than spacers or new wheels that would help..
-
maybe you can reduce the maximum stearing angle? turning radius will increase, but ur frame is cleared.
-
Are there any particular wheels out there that anyone is aware of that work?
I guess wheel spacers would be okay...has anyone had any problems with these? Would there be a preference between Spidertrax and the ones offered by Rocky Road, or are they the same?
Would it be totally crazy to modify the frame?
Thanks for all the help. This place is great.
Best,

i have the same seyup on a 2001 zr2. 15" rims it rubs a little at full lock but is not a problem just sound kinda strange. the frame has a rounded edge and it has not messed any thing up, you hjust need to be aware of it. it has been like that for two years no promlems. good luck!

While I was reinstalling my swaybar this evening, I noticed something interesting.
My tires are rubbing where the sway bar mounting surface is welded onto the frame. It appears there would be plenty enough material to grind a bout .25-.5" (that's all I'd need for clearance) and not actually bite into the frame...just the very back of the big plate they welded onto the frame.
I'll look at it quite a bit more closely. Hopefully it will be feasible rather than going with spacers. :-\ I'll keep the progress posted.
I took a picture, but I'm not sure how to post it...

what if any lift are you running, or is your truck stock height? Is your Vit 2L 4 Cylinder?
I'd like to know cause I have a 2002 Tracker, no lift, 2L and if these tires fit, I'm going to get some. (thought I'll probably got 225/70-16)

no matter what lift the tires will rub the frame at 30's and up on full lock with stock rims. very lightly but enough, my 31 tsl rub the frame with 3.5 inches of lift! spacers or offset rims!!! go with the biggest that clear your fenders and don't worry about a slight frame rub. just pay attention when turning.

Aceluck...
I have the Boondox lift, which I believe amounts to around 2". My Vitara is the 2.0L. I had good luck with the Suzuki 4cyl before (178K in my previous rig and it was still running strong)
I believe Bzzr2 is right...now matter what the lift (reasonable life anyway) the tires will rub at around 29"
My 1996 Sport had the same tires I have now, and it rubbed slightly before and after a lift.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to grind a little bit of the bracket to make some clearance, smooth it out, and what little rubbing is left should be fine. I can do this without touching the actual frame.
I'll post a photo when I figure out how... ;)

We have the same "rubbage" with our 2003 GV. It only seems to happen at max lock in either direction. I'm not terribly worried about it. Doesn't sound very pleasant but so far the tires are fine.
I've seen thin spacers, less than 1/4", in some parts stores before. I'm tempted to go find a set and see how they affect the rubbage but then the wheel studs aren't very long and I don't know if I want to further shorten them via wheel spacers.
At any rate I'm not that worried about it.

Is this primarily an issue with mud/offroad tires with bigger tread blocks? I am about to go to 235/70/16 on my XL7 but it seems that some tires are shy of 29" in that size. (in fact I looked at some Michelin Cross-Terrains and unmounted they were closer to 28") the ones I'm buying are Kumho Road Venture AT's
-
I think it's mostly a function of the height of the tire. Some of us have this with 225/75R16's and others report it with 235/70R16's. I bet if you crank your stock tire right now and look back there next to the frame there's less than an inch of clearance. Now add a 1-2" taller tire and you'll see where it'll get close.
I do wonder if a less aggressive tire without lugs would bite. My bet is that it would, but not as much. Mine's just a smallish spot on both sides and I have no apparent tread damage...but I can't imagine a less aggressive tire in the same size would be that much smaller/narrower that it would miss completely.
Maybe try a 225/75R16 or 225/70R16 in an AT?

i can say that when my tsl's rub it is very noticable cause the lugs are so big, it feels pretty rough in the steering wheel. i had the same issue with my 30" coopers. i only cranked it for a test to see how bad it was. whenever i get wheel spacers i'll let you guys know how that goes. it'll be a while though i imagine, i'll be wheeling it good this weekend and if i notice any stability issues i may make this happen sooner..

thanks for reminding me to check, I guess I was assuming it wouldn't be an issue at this size... looks like I'm in luck with the XL7, the stock 235/60/16 clears the frame by at least 2 inches at full lock. those are nearly new / full tread so I don't think I'll have any issue going to 235/70/16. plus I'm putting in a 1-1.5" lift so they should clear the fenders nicely too :)
-
I bet you'll still rub a little. Remember that while the width will be the same that width will now be an inch or so further out and closer to the frame.
-
I think I'll be ok, the new tire diameter will be at most 1" further out on either side, and there seems to be enough space at the frame with the steering wheel forced over as far as it'll go... maybe there's something different about the hubs or wheel backspacing on the XL7? I know the front calipers are rather large so the wheel spokes have to be further out
-
Your front suspension is exactly the same as mine. Wheels are different design but the same size and backspacing.
-
I bought wheel spacers on ebay for 20.00$ they are aluminium quarter inch and can fit right on your stock bolts. They work great and give the extra quarter inch of width.
-
how do the lug nuts fit? do you still have plenty of threads to tighten up? i have thought about using the same thing to get alittle more with, thanks.

Toofaroffroad...
Keep us posted on how well those spacers work out. About 1/4 inch is all that I would need to clear my tire/frame rubbing.
-
got the Kumho ATs mounted, good news... no rubbing at full lock, still got a little over an inch of clearance by the frame. will have to try it on an incline and in reverse to see if there's any issue
also it's close in the rear but it looks like I may get away with not having to trim anything.
the other good news is that these tires are significantly quieter than I expected :)

hey toofaroffroad,
how are those 1/4inch spacers working out for you?
