i was wheeling recently and my front tires were up against a burm and i dug some holes with my rear tirers and my rear axel was soon holding up my samurai. the rear were now spinning freely and my front tires were not pulling at all in 4 low and high. i was able to let out the clutch and not give it any throttle and it wouldnt die. when i gave it thottle i could hear a clunking noise some where from the front axle. the front dive line was still spinning but the tires wouldnt turn. also i can still turn the hubs frome lock to free. im hoping someone could help me out with what the problem is. if u think you can help or need additional info to figure it out send me a message. thanks

dude, congradulations, you broke an axle shaft.
i felt pretty cool the first time i did it.

I would say you snapped a birfield. Welcome to the club. ;D Get birf rings when you put the new one in to stop it from happening again.

as a side note for when you take your busted birfield or axle out, my book said the steering knuckle had to be taken off, it doesn't.

If you have stock birfields (& I bet you do!) you can remove the axles as holypockets has pointed out. Do a search for front axle at Ack's FAQ (the link is in my signature) to find an illustrated article on the disasssembly process.
BTW, you are a LOT farther down the carnage trail than I am! The last thing I broke on my Samurai was the bead on a front tire at the Melt. Big Deal... :P

If you are lucky, it will be a birfield. Even without rings, you might be unlucky and find this:
