I've been thinking of buying my buddies samurai, it has no engine and he wants about $300 for it. So, Whats a good motor? I don't want to put the old one back in(he still has it), because I know the power outputs on those things. They are horendous.
So i remembered my other buddy who is into import cars, has a 240sx he is parting out. He said he'd sell me the KA24 in it for cheap. For those not familiar, it is a 2.4 i4 making 155hp, 160 torque. Would that bolt right up(there from the same country LOL)? Or would stock sammy's parts even hold that much power?
The only problem I can forsee, is the engine not bolting directly up to the tranny, or having to make my own motor mounts.
Any other good, cheap engine options?

The only easy swaps are the trackick 8v and 16v motors and VW diesels. Any thing else will take major fabrication skills.
-
VW diesels? Got any info on them? They aren't the old aircooled ones, right?
-
I've never heard of an air cooled diesel. Here is a link to all kinds of info on the swap http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/board,15.0.html

So pretty much the only easy swaps, are the ones that make absolutly no power? I kinda wanted a sammy, but I guess I won't get one now.
Do the 16v kick engines have anytyhing worth looking at? Or are they power deprived too?
-
LOL, which one of those motors has little power? VW 1.9 TD has WAY more power and torque than the stock 60 hp Sammy motor. The 16v also is a huge power increase. You do not need 200 HP in a 2100 lb vehicle.
-
baltour,
Take a Kick for a drive and then think of that power with about 40 - 50 % less weight.
Dude you gotta do some more searching on the net. If you want excessive power then yeh go throw a big horsepower donk at it. About the only thing you will achieve is ruining the fine balance of the Sammie :'(
Me - 1600 16V conversion for sure - VERY nice upgrade ;) Drop "Trail Tough" a line and they can organise a whole bolt in kit ( read - No head aches ;D )
Just my 2c

Here's a reputable company that specializes in that field:

Thanks for the site, I am reading through it now.

The most amount of hp I could find on the diesel, was 85hp. If that is WAY more than 66hp on stockers, than I can't wait to see what you think of the sr20 I wanted to put in it.
I know all about low weight, little engine cars, I used to own a CRX.
I don't need a 200hp motor in a 2100 lb vehicle? You don't NEED to go offroading. You don't NEED to mod cars at all. But I prefer to have power, speed, and offroad-ablitiy, all in one package, which is the reason why I joined the forums and asked the questions that I did. I know what low weight vehicles are capable of, again, I've owned a CRX.

Keep looking....there are several VW diesel motors, 85 hp is just the 1.6 liter. You also need to look at HP/torque numbers vs RPM's.

rocky road outfitters (theres alink on zukiworld homepage) has some good deals on swap kits. turbo diesil is the way to go though. and if u got some extra money to throw around they also offer a v-6 chevy vortec which would give u every thing u wanted.
-
ah 1.6 is plenty of power in a sammy... then just add the tracker/sidekick diff gears to the sammy, I went with 4.62's on a 1.3 and weber carb, highway speeds no problem... turning 31x10.5's also.
-
the G13B from a suzuki swift gt is also a good swap for a sammi. 100hp, 80 ft lbs of torque
-
Also take a look at the Trail Tough 2ltr conversion. GV 2ltr is around 120bhp stock, getting on for twice what a 1.3 makes, should tune up well too.

Heres a quick summary of the most common swaps that you will find if you research these forums:
suzuki 1.6l 8v and 16v: Most years will work(89-95?), provide nice power, bolt in installation with inexpensive adapter kits, need donor parts in addition to complete engine.
Suzuki 2.0 16v: 1999-2002 Adapter kit available, lots of power, bolt in with kit but more complicated than 1.6.
VW 1.6-1.9-1.9td: Diesel swap adapters available, largely bolt in but more complicated than 1.6l swap, engines seem to be more expensive, great torque and around 30 mpg, good for off-roading with lots of low end torque, water resistant, etc.
Chevy vortec 4.3 carb or efi: Big power, big cost swap, fabricating skillz needed, kits available with all needed parts and engine/tranny, as a bonus replacement parts are cheap and widely available.
In general people seem to be very happy with their 1.6 and diesel swaps. I have read mixed reviews on the chevy swap, may depend a lot on the fab skillz of your installer or yourself.
If you are going to try any other engine you are on your own as far as adapter plates, and will have to rely on your fab skillz. I have seen everything from ford v-6, chevy v-8, mazda rotary, various diesels, swift motor, toyota 22re, etc....

Or try Lightning Conversions, I hear they do good work.

Hahahahahahahaha
No, that's not funny.

I'm currently going this route myself, its not quite a straight bolt in. Unless you're running a big lift the 1.6 sump must be swapped for the 1.3 sump. If its an early 1.3 then the baffling needs to be modified, later 1.3s are supposedly OK. The 1.3 oil pick up pipe needs to be cut and shut onto the 1.6 oil pump. The overall height of the engine will be higher so you need either a body lift or a 'power bulge' or the bonnet (hood) won't close.

You can also turbo the 1.6/1.9 VW diesel also. Diesels love turbo.
But you also have to factor in how much money you are wanting to spend. I have seen a tracker with a SR20DET but it was only RWD.
-
I currently have a VW 1.6NA in my rig..........With the 4.16 tcase and 31s it could use a little more power but does pretty good. I do have a 1.6TD that I am in the process of setting up to swap in.

No power!!! I've got the 16v swapped into mine. On 33's with STOCK GEARS I can walk away from people on the street, and smoke the tires. even if you get the 8v you are upping the torque for off road capability. Look at it like this...the stock sammi 1.3 gets you 62hp. a 1.6 16v is good for about 98 + about 10-15 if you leave the lighter sammi flywheel on. That doubling your horsepower McFly!!! If that doesn't do it for you, you can abandon the whole Zuk drive train and power it with a chevy small block, with a compatible trans and t-case. But most people end up lengthening the sammi to accomodate this swap. Plus now your doubleing the weight. So you've got to ask yourself, how powerful do you actually want a Samurai to be??

this is a little off topic but my dad had an air cooled diesel tractor that was so precision made it didint have a head gasket. :o

This is all true but VERY easy with minor fab skills. The oil pan mods took me all of 1 hour or so.I did the 16V in my little sammie and can cruise at 75 MPH on the freeway no problem. It will also do wheelies as Eric can verify.

hmm.what one of my friends did down here was put a nissan SR20 in his samurai.fuel injected, the works.it runs like a biach, did 15s or higher on the 1/4 mile.but has stability issues.best swap is a 16V vitara engine, best power/weight ratio.
also there is a guy here who put in a rotary engine from an RX-7 in his sami, not too sure which one it was,but.....that's an extreme case, not really an offroading vehicle anymore, more a street sleeper.

if you want a better drivetrin put a toyota 22r in its got a lote more hp and torqe than all the moters thay are talking about. the trans and t case is a reliable and stronger setup. sorry im a zuk guy too but im a mechanic and toyota is much more reliable. the gearing is less expensive too.
