Greetings Zuksters,
I'm the proud keeper of an 86 biodiesel fueled Samurai, Calmini 3.5" SR kit, and a 1.6 VW Turbodiesel.
Here's a pic of my rig:
After really looking, it looks like we have decided on a Calmini C3 bumper:

So, what size winch does a 2,500lb zuk need? We're used to using block and tackles for other work around the place... Do I really need a winch with more ummph than the rig weighs? <Other than pulling out hummers...>

Whatcha think?

Depends what your going to do I have been competing in Winch challenges so I went for as big as would fit my bumper.
I run a warn 9000I and the motor packed up and I was told that i shouldnt have taken it into water,,
so I upgraded to an X9 Superwinch with a 12.500 motor and that does the trick for me.

I think the normal rule to apply is your vehicle weight x 1.5, so ruffly for a Sammy I'd say around 4000 Lbs minimum.
Mine weighs 2910 Lbs trail ready and I run a Warn M6000 which combined with a snatch block has never let me down even when bogged up to the door handles.
This is the minimum I would ever consider running for my trucklet and having done it over again it would be a 9000 Lbs on the front, ya can never have too bigger winch IMHO.
-
its weight times 2 due to the fact u only have half the pulling capacity of the winch after 7 cable raps. if it price look at the Mile Marker e-winchs the hydrolic version of this company has been around for years and is used by the U.S. military on most of thier vehicals. the price is nearly half of a waren or other name brand winches and look around and u can always find one with free shipping and usually $100 rebate.
-
I've about decided on the Warn high speed 8k.
Now I'm just shopping around for the best price...
-
I would go with a 8000 or 9000, just because the extra power is nice.
Milemarkers are nice and work great, but they are slow. If that's not a problem, I can't recomend buying a Warn or Superwinch instead unless you can find a used one.
I run a Superwinch 9000 and like the fact that they bolt forward instead of down like the Warns and Milemarkers. It just makes more sence if our pulling.
-
I am more than satisfied with my Warn M6000. Besides, if I run a snatch block back to the rig, that's 12,000 pounds of pulling.
Also, I run synthetic winch cable from http://www.rockstomper.com - replacing the 5/16" X 80 foot steel cable on my winch with:
175 feet of 1/4 inch synthetic
It has a rated strength of 9,200 pounds, which would not be exceeded, even if you're doubling back through a snatch block (as the line is then doubled).
-
You might consider "who" your wheeling with. If your wheeling with a heaver vehicle, you might need to tie off and winch them out. Just a thought.
I have a Warn 8000 winch. There's been times I've seen my buddys 12,000 Warn stop at a dead pull (Jeep pulling Jeep), so you never know.
I will also second the winch rope. Their light weight and are a lot easer to work with than the steel cable. It seemed like it was only the second time using the steel cable, it was kinking and bird caging on me. And yes I was being carefull.

now can a winch be bolted up to a facotory bumper is my question?

I have a Warn 8000lb winch, It has pulled em out of any situation. However I dont try and pull anyone else bigger than me out anymore, I tried to pull my buddys full off of a berm and ripped off my front bumper (the Calmini one). So ya kgotta be a little careful that your bumper bolts can withstand the pulling force. I upgraded them to grade 8 now.

Don't hardly think ya want to bolt it to that factory bumper (beer can material)  Mile Markers are slow but mine has never stalled or let me down, even after being under water.

Thats what I also ran for over 2 years. I loved it. As many of you already know I lead trail rides through out the year at off road events. My winch really gets a workout between rescuing myself ::) and others. It finally started breaking right before I went on the UA. First Id like to say that I was really wedged. When it broke my winch (m6000 Warn) had come to a full stop and it snapped back only a few feet. I tied a Knot in it and went back about my winching. When I went to reorder I bought 3/8 only cause I wanted grey. Rockstomper only sells 1/4 in blue.

I just posted this on OffRoad.com similar subject.
What about weight difference??
I whent with a Ramsey Rep 8.5E because it weighs almost half what others with the same pull.
-Ramsey Rep 8.5E-----56lbs
-Chicago 8000 (Type)----106lbs (shipping weight,,,, anyway)
-Warn M8000-----------74lbs
-Superwinch EP.9-----108lbs
Husky 8-------113lbs
EPi9-----114lbs
S9000-1916-----82lbs
1917-----95lbs
That was what sold me. Im sure the pricer stuff Is kick a$$ and all but for as much as I use it and considering Im not climbing huge bolders in comp., the light weight fairly low priced (I payed like $350-400 for it shipped new) Rep8.5 is Prefect and has saved my but and a few fullsize rigs quite a few times and its alwayse under water (I did mount the Relay under the hood though), never have a problem.

One thing I have taken into consideration while preparing for a winch is to secure it properly with the strongest attachment possible. I watched several Zuk's winch up a nasty waterfall section last year and swore to god half the winches and bumpers were coming off the trucks :o  One moved what seemed to be at least two inches. A friend runs a warn X9000I and was winching the entire weight of his Zuk up the rock and the bumper didn't move. I recommendhttp://www.shrockworks.com/zukfrontbumper.htm stuff. That's what he runs . Really stout and clean work. I have a set of his rock sliders on the wife's TJ and they are super beefy. Jim's a great guy and I always support the little guy when I can.
And , as for winch size, 8K, minimum. It won't always be just you you're winching out of a stuck. Just my .02

Thanks for the tips! That synthetic rope/cable sure seems like a good idea. I have always been nervous being around a taughtly stretched cable......

It's more than a good idea, it's REQUIRED in several competition groups:
Synthetic winch rope is currently required by the following:
UROC
ERoCC
NEUROC
Mike I can't believe you went to 3/8" for the COLOR!
-
Yea I know, but blue and orange just dont look right. :P Hey at least I dont haveDubs with spinners! ;D

how much does the nose dip when you add the weight of a winch bumper & winch?
what can you do about it ? (I already run RRO spacers as part of my spring & spacer lift)

You could add a stronger set of coils. Are you running stock coils? Add a set of 4 door coils for about an inch of lift.

Well, yeah, they might run you out of Minnesota, for having Bronco colors!
The "nose dip" question is a good one - the Calmini lift comes with beefier springs that compensate for that weight - the bumper and winch have GOT to weigh a few hundred pounds together! As much as the ENGINE!!!
-
I run +1.5" Ironman uprated springs, with RRO 1" spacers, all round, and don't really want to have to replace them.
-
I had OME heavy duty springs on the LWB in preparation for fitting the winch. When it went on, the front dipped a little but not much. When I swapped to the Calmini 3" I kept my OME struts and still used the Calmini strut spacers and it sits level.
-
Ya know the rubber bushings that go on top of the coils? Get a pair of them from the salvage yard and trim the bottom lip off. Works good as a shim to help level things. :-/ One of those equals almost 1/2 inch in the front.

-
A piece of that white cutting board stuff works good as top up spacers as well! its 3/8" thick and easy to cut.
-
Hey while we're on the winch subject here what's your preferred brand and why,
price ?
proved reliability ?
weight ?
Amount of rope it holds ?
Color ? (for Mike anyway ;D)
Mine was Warn only for the fact I got it second hand off a young guy who had it on a Yota mini truck just cause he though it looked cool with it (he never used it once) ??? If this one hadn't come up I don't know if I would of brought a cheaper brand (Chinese) one or still gone for the warn or superwinch.
-
Ramsey 8000 'cause I picked it up cheap and it would fit in my ARB bar ;D
-
Im running an M6000. I love it. Its fast, strong, and the price wasnt bad either. I mounted the solinoids under the hood to keep them out of the enviroment. It has been very reliable.
Mike
-
I put mine in the back so didn't have to get mud on my boots ;D
(http://www.eye-irritant.com/august2004/win 2.JPG)
I didn't have a lot of room in the engine bay and didn't want it on the front either so I decided to put it back there with the battery. Works good too, only my winch bitch has to get out now ;D
-
Mines under the hood with the hand controller plug mounted in the grille and a switch inside as well.

Not with the Ramsey and the DIY mount from Shrockworks thats less than a 100lbs total
-
I love my Warn M6000. It's gotten me out of all kinds of jams.

Bob do you have a ground anchor or do you re lie on trees and other nature anchors instead ?
I use one of these PRT Land Anchors when theres nothing to hook up to
(http://www.anchorrightinternational.com/html/blob.php?documentCode=79)
Awesome product !
-
I was having a look at Opposite Lock's Man-made Tree/Ground Anchor. Be pretty easy to knock one up.

I have a warn M8000 and I like it alot. I need to replace the cable it is kinda messed up in spots. Also it has wound up on it self.. what is a good way to undo this. i was thinking of hookin up ot a tree and with the winch in free spool backing up slowly to try and fix it. Would this be okay?
I had a mile marker hydraulic wich on my old dodge pick up and it would pull for days but it kad a slow line speed.

I used a Jeep Grand Cherokee as a winch point once. Did you know that Jeep Grand Cherokees don't have any winching points? I wrapped the cable around the front axle!!! No, I don't carry any ground anchors. But with 175 feet of line, I can usually get to SOMETHING!
