I sanded down some bubble rust I had, then coated it with some stuff called rust converter from wall mart.  Works well no rust has returned where I used it.  there some other stuff out there that works well too, like post aboved mentioned, some of that junk out there is useless tho.

get something that everyone says they have used...

They sound interesting, I've only heard about them from friends but have no idea how they work, it would be nice to know though

Ihe key ingredient in rust convertor is  phosphoric acid. You can buy a gallon for around 12.oo bucks at a chemical supply store and mix it with 4 parts water. It will kill the rust in one or two treatments. depending on how bad, it may not take care of it if it is more than surface rust.  The advantage to the convertors is that they often times have other chemicals that provide a prime. If the project is large, like a 600 ft. 5 1/2 inch steel pipe fence that I painted, it would be almost cost prohibitive to use a convertor. In your case, I would use the convertor. I see it at Lowes, and commercail paint stores. I always keep a qt. on hand. I have heard that it causes certain undercoatings and bedliner spray to peel. Not sure if its true but someone here probably has experience in that area. Adam

I personally think "Chassis Saver"   from Magnetic Paints company beats POR-15

BUT, POR-15 is good too.

I used Chassis Saver on my little rust bucket about 7 months ago, and no where that I painted is rusting yet, and my bucket was DEFINITELY rusted..  (still is in many places)

With POR-15 or Chassis Saver do you have to sand the paint off of the surface first?  Here is a pic of the kind of rust I'm looking to use it on.  http://www.keithert.com/pics/nx2000/DSCF5919.JPG

chassis saver is an EXCELLENT primer..

Keith, you are going to have to chip all that bubble rust away, and then apply a POR15 or CHASSIS SAVER type product, then skim with body filler, and reprime and then paint.

That is an easy spot to fix..

I don't think you need POR15 for that, if it were me, I'd remove the fender and bottom a-pillar trim, then sand/grind it to bare metal - if it's bumpy I'd fill it with a little short-strand fiberglass(or body-filler will do) sand it smooth, and prime it. Then, go to my local CarQuest shop with the color code of the car and have a spray-can made of that color, and paint it. That's not a bad area to have rust, I bet if you did this, it wouldn't creap out for a few years, if at all.

true.. BUT, if you used a little chassis save on it.. I don't think it would EVER creep out again.

That stuff STOPS rust dead.

I've used POR15 and Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator on different vehicles.  Had so-so results with the POR15 and the Rust Encapsulator the verdict is still out on.  POR15 fades if you leave it exposed to sunlight and I had problems with it shrinking back around the edges in places.
The Rust Encapsulator I only recently used on some wheels and a lift for my Ranger and neither have done anything but sit on the floor since I painted them.  The Rust Encapsulator seems to be a good primer though, I painted the wheels with Rustoleum Hammered Black afterwards and it seems to have stuck to them well.

I think next I'll try the Chassis Saver like Quaddawg used.  I've got rust in the same places keith has and more.  I don't expect this thing to run forever but I'd like it to get me through a few more winters.

POR15, Rust Encapsulator, and Chassis Saver can all be painted over, you just have to follow their instructions and do it soon after application for best results.

Loctite also makes a "rust converter" product called "Extend".  Clean the surface of dirt, spray or paint the product on and the rust is converted or absorbed by the product.

They also have a product called "Rust Dissolver" that strips steel down to the bare metal eliminating sanding or scraping.

Yep, links to the Loctite web page describing these products (with part numbers) can be found by searching for loctite at Ack's FAQ (link is in my Signature)  select the specialty products link.  ;D
