Title: Steering Shaft Twisting / Flexing Problem

I have a Samurai with the stock axles and 5" SPUA.
I'm running 32" Tires and recently have noticed a problem with Steering WheelFelx and unusual noises from the upper shaft area...  

When I round a corner and turn more than 1/4 turn I can hear the bearing in the upper steering shaft creaking.  Then if I'm sitting still or doing a "K" turn and turning the steering Wheel, The wheel turns slightly and the Steering Shaft is Twisting Slightly.  I'm concerned that the Shaft may break off while driving..

When the Steeering Wheel is under tension I can actually turn the wheel 1/2"  ( Outermost Dimension) before the shaft begins to turn at the rag Joint....The Shaft is literally twisting...Is this made out of Spring Steel?


I'm going to install a Power Steering Pump and Box to help Relieve some of the stress but still have to deal with the Column Issue..

Has anyone had this problem?

What did you do to correct it?  

Does a Steering Column from A Tracker/Sidekick Fit?

Pretty common for the upper mini u-joint on the shaft to dry out and get so tight the wheel won't return to straight after you make a turn. It may be hard to believe but I'll bet you thats your culprit.

Yep,  What he said.   I think a Kick steering u-joint might even fit in it's place.
