Title: t-case shifter vibration
Post by: Westerner on August 19, 2006, 07:32:03 PM
I've had my Samurai since last Christmas. It's still stock save a Crawler II rear bumper and a tuffy console. Throughout that time, when ever I have the front wheels locked, and am driving in two wheel drive, the transfer case shifter knob vibrates fairly roughly once I get up to about 35 - 40 mph. It's directly speed related; I can disengage the clutch and lay off the throttle and it still vibrates at speed. The vibration is carried into the steering wheel as well.

This was all fine and dandy because it wasn't that big of a deal. I would just unlock the wheels for 2wd operation. My best guess for the cause of the vibrations was that there were differering roational vibrations between the front and rear drive shafts since both would turn with the front wheels locked. Street driving was fine with regard to the transfer case...no untoward vibrations. I assumed this was since only the rear drive shaft was rotating and there was no ability for harmonic interference.

However a few hundred miles ago, I noticed that while in two wheel drive, with the wheels unlocked, at about 20 MPH (the top end of second gear in the acceleration curve) there was a violent shaking of the shifter knob. It essentially ceases when I disenglage the clutch and poke it into third, but not entirely.

The strangest thing is that the vibration stops once I hit 25 - 30 mph. It's as normal as ever at 70 mph on I-5.

Though I didn't think of this when it was only happening, before I owned the Samurai, my grandpa owned it and towed it behind his RV for extended periods. I'm not sure if he removed the drive shaft or started the car every 200 miles, which I read you were supposed to do while towing it or something would happen to the transfer case...do my symptoms sound like the result of that towing? My only other thought was loosening of the T-case mount...thus allowing the whole thing to vibrate.

Four wheel drive operation is solid and it doesn't seem as though the tranfser case is a weak spot. It works in both 4H and 4L seamlessly....it's just the vibration that puzzles me.

Any thoughts?

There is no need to start a manual trans every
200 miles, the trans and T-case are lubed by the
rotation of the gears.

Sounds to me like the rear drive shaft is out of phase,
which is the front and rear U-joints are not in the same
phase of rotation, this causes wear on the U-joints and
then the viberation starts.

U-joints should be in line     O--------------O   if they do not
line up, pull the shaft apart and put together in phase, you
should replace the U-joints too if they have been out of phase
as they will be stressed and worn.

Good Luck
