Title: Who needs a tent on those 4x4 trips?!
Post by: jamescraft34 on August 26, 2006, 06:43:53 PM
My homemade Tracker bed!  Even works as a secure storage compartment underneath when I lock the passenger door because it bolts to the floor!  Wish it was black but I already had the vinyl laying around the house, oh well..
Thought I would share...

Kind of cool, but it relegates you to not taking anyone on your daytime or nighttime trips.

I know I only plan on using it on trips where everyone has their own rig

does it fit in the back too?

because a shelf in the back
and a bed at night (with alterations to easily remove the seat)
would be pretty trick

I always thought you could just remove the passenger side headrest and the seat would lay down nearly flat.  Though I've not had to try it yet!

my '95 2-door does.  well almost flat....plenty flat enough to get a comfortable sleep.  Just push the passenger seat up as far forward as you can.  take off the head rest lay it down and put the seat back till it lines up with the back seat.  throw in a sleeping bag and pillow and your all set.

good idea, but how about fabbing up some brackets that would use the seat mounting bolts so you could swap them out in just a few minutes?  just a thought.

I thought of just reclining the seat but I usually take out the back seat and install a yakima basket when I go on 4x4 trips so my seats only recline so much.  I mounted two brackets so a 2x6 can slide in and the basket can attach to it. Actually gives me a ton of storage space.  When I am sleeping my feet just slide under it.
As for custom brackets to attach that platform it actually is using a existing seat mount hole.  It just pops out with one bolt

Would a similiar setup work if put over the reclined front seats?

Not in my case b/c the basket will not allow the seats to recline all the way.  If the basket was out I couldn't see it working anyways b/c how can you get the seat completely flat?  The bed lays flat to the rear trunk area.  I am going to try it out this weekend on an overnight trip.  Sort of cool considering it only took me an hour and 10 bucks to make:)

It would be cool to make something like this will folding legs so it goes flat, then put it on the roof rack when you're actually driving.  Then when you get there, just roll out a thermarest or pad of some sort onto it.  So that it's not inside the tracker at all times, and out of the way.

I've never slept in my sidekick, but i wonder what it's insulation is like...  I know in the soft top it wasn't so great on cold mornings.  It would be nice not to have to set up a tent though.

Ive slept in mine 3 times. Too Cold. Also I cant seem to feel secure with the soft top as it can be defeated with nothing more than your bare hands :P. Go to REI and buy a nice large sleeping bag and things will be a lot more comfortable, and warm ;).

I have slept in a reclining front seat before, and I find this solution much more comfortable...  ...and it was cheap...  $355 on eBay...

The down side is you have to park it somewhere before you hit the trail.  You also have to be kinda careful to keep your rig together so you can tow it back home...
