Title: You guys with taller tires, auto trans, and no correction, how's it shift?
Post by: AJMBLAZER on August 27, 2006, 02:26:34 PM
Just wondering how everybody else's Tracker/GV/Vit/XL7 shifts with the taller tires and their automatic trans?

I've got a speedo recalibrator on ours so the trans actually knows how fast we are going with the bigger tires and shifts correctly because of it.  However where I installed it (before the ECM) is causing problems and it throws a code.  So I'm going to move it to after the ECM which will result in a correct speedo and odo but incorrect shifting...or should result in that.  I've done this on other vehicles and had so-so shifting on some and not much of a difference on others.

Anyone notice funny shifting, late shifts, early shifts, shifting in and out of gear, etc?

Well, removed the box and ran out of time so I took it for a spin.  The CEL is off and it drives fine,  seems to shift about normal.  Going to try and find a GPS or test it against the Ranger (I know it's speedo is pretty close to dead nuts accurate).  If it's really close I might just leave it off.

I've been running 245/75/16 for over two years now.  I would have to the shifting is fine.  Just wish I could regear to 5.8 R&P's

Gotcha.  Ours is about 8% off and I'm tempted to just leave it.  Meanwhile I've got this $100+ recalibration box sitting here and I think I've figured out which wires to connect it to so I guess I'll fix it. 8)

i've done nothing with mine but check it against my gps, with the 31's i'm roughly 10% off also.  mine's still under warranty and even the dealer said nothing about it.  this basically equates to the odometer showing 10000k for every 11000k driven.

Do you guys not re-gear your diffs?
Wouldn't 5.13 r&p's help with gearing and speedo error. That is what I plan on doing when I get around to lifting my GV - one project at a time though.

As for my 3 door auto 2.0 V6 running 235/85x16's - gear changes are fine. Actually shifts very smoothly with no problems over stock. Stock r&p's - 4.88:1. Haven't bothered to fit 5.13:1 r&p's at this stage because not much to gain from all the hassle. Wish I could get 5.8's for this rig.

I would regear if I could but I have an XL-7 that comes with 5.125 R&P so I'm SOL and no one makes gears or anything as a matter of fact for the XL-7 rear  >:(

Hi blacknight :)

Dude, with all that power do you really need to re-gear  ???

I do love the look of your rig. How has it all been going lately?

Yes, because you want to keep the ability to use that power.  Running big tires with the "incorrect" gear ratio means you're essentially wasting power and giving yourself worse mpg.

Regearing is like ensuring as close to factory performance as you can get with bigger tires.  I've actually had vehicles where you could achieve better performance than stock due to the factory's original lousy tire/gear ratio choice.

Yeah I do understand what you are saying AJMBLAZER.

I was just saying "Hello" in a light hearted sort of a way. If you get what I mean - hell I wish I had 135 Kw and the extra torque 1000rpm lower on tap  ;)

Gotta find my Newton-Meter to ft/lb torque convertor...

http://www.mr2ownersclub.com/converter.htm

100ft/lbs...hell, double that or better! ;D ;)  I wish we had a diesel option!

I was unsure of your post.  You'd be surprised over here how many people lift their rigs and never regear.  The ones that think the 3.73 or 4.10 factory gears in their fullsize pickups are deep enough to spin 38's and then wonder why their auto trans doesn't shift right and they're getting 9mpg...if they can even tell because their speedo is 25mph off or more at 55. ::)  Meanwhile you get behind them on the freeway and it's like watching a supertanker accelerate. :P  So I always try to correct people like that.

Keep up the good work  :)

I installed 225/75/R15's on my 03 Tracker 2.0L 4 Cyl. Good tires, but now it wont hold OD on the highway.

Its ridiculous the RPM difference from 3rd to OD. It goes from 4500 down to 3000 at 110 km/hr. Then it bogs at 3000 at the first gust of wind and kicks up to 4500.

Anyone know what the stock diff gears are for my tracker? Im hopin 4.62 so I can swap in some 5.12's, or any other suggestions?

Thanks,

-Steve
