I just did a compression check on my '87 Samurai which has over 100,000 miles. #1 was 149, #2 was147, #3 was 145, #4 was 146.
These numbers seem awfully good and surprisingly high. They were done with a lightly warmed engine, all plugs removed at the same time and cranked for a good 5 seconds.
What is the opinion of anybody who knows what they should be.?

Sounds good, all the #s are close together too,
good tight engine.

those numbers are great but i am not sure about taking all the plugs out is that the way you are suppose to do it i want to do mine i think they say the motor needs to be turning at 400 rpm and iam not sure if a stock starter will spin one that fast

do a goggle search on compression tests, i thought it was 1 at a time

The way I was tought was remove all the plugs
and throttle open when you crank the engine.
Either way the engine #s look good

my haynes book said minimum was 199lbs. i don't really trust this, what do other books say?
-
199 PSI LOL, Way too high
Check and make sure that's not for a Diesel engine ;)

Thats the usual way. If you have electronic ignition then you should disconnect the plug to the distributor too

Ohh ya, I always ground the coil lead too,
just to be safe, don't want any blown igniters
