Title: Samurai engine problem
Post by: turnpikewood on August 31, 2006, 11:56:57 AM
I have an '88 Samurai with some engine problems.
When first started, it stalls out or just barely runs.
When warmed up, it runs great. At any temp, the idle
is very erratic, from racing to almost stalling. Plugs have
been changed, had "fuel system cleaning," to no avail.
Any advice or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Is this an EFI Sammy???

If so you might have a bad wax pellet
cold start/idle problem, common on
early EFI systems.

I never messed with mine, high cold idle
and some almost stalling when warm, I
turned up the idle screw on the TBI unit,
and you might check the throttle cable for
binding, when they get old they fray and
catch in the outer sheath. I've replaced my
throttle cable twice since I bought the Trucklet
new in 89 (SideKick) the systems should be
very similar if not identical

Good Luck

Check fast idle, and also check vac lines for a leak.  there are a couple lines that really bog the motor down if its cold at start.  but will run somewhat decent at warm engine temp.  Other than that could be choke needed adjustment.

this may sound stupid, but make sure you have the air/water hoses right on the carb.

I didn't and it did that for a while, I now have a shot motor that burns oil like crazy, and a 1barrel carb.

If they are wrong, you will take in water and ruin everything.

And mine was doign just what yours was when it was wrong.
