Title: How does the 4wd engage?
Post by: lowrezolution on September 01, 2006, 03:34:38 PM
I had a post earlier about a metallic noise in 4wd.
I'm wondering if its not fully engaging? How does it engage? Vacuum?  How can I check this out?

The transfer case gear is purely mechanical, but the front axle drive is engaged by pressure from a pump, which pushes against a sort of disk.  The disk appears to push a dog clutch type mechanism into engagement, from the drawing, but it's not that distinct.

Where is this pump located? I have a feeling my hubs aren't engaging fully and this is were the noise is coming from. I will see if I can spot it and check all the lines etc.

Thanks eh!

Unless you put manual or auto hubs on it your stock hubs aren't really hubs, just solid peices of splined metal that slip over the ends of the axleshaft and hold everything in place.  The correct term suddenly escapes me...just woke up. :P

The actuator is on the long arm side of your front axle/differential.  The axleshaft between the diff and the where the cv-shaft bolts up is actually two seperate peices with the slide collar and mechanism in between them.

Can you get manual lockers to replace the auto lockers? Warn shows some but theie tech line says they are for replacement of factory manual lockers and not to replace the auto lockers!

????????

What do you mean by auto and manual lockers?  Lockers are devices that go inside the differentials.

If you mean locking hubs then again, yours doesn't have auto anything at the ends of the axle.  It has drive flanges (ha, finally remembered the term!) like these:

Which can easily be replaced by any Tracker/Sidekick manual hubs or the Warn hubs you saw.  Here's ours with hubs off of a '93 Tracker:

Even with manual hubs you'd still have the air engagement system in your front axle.  That can be replaced but it's a lot more complicated.

The pump is behind the front bumper, on the passenger side (N America).

All is cool now, found the plug to the pump all filled with crap. Cleared it out with electrical cleaner and coated in dielectric grease, she's mint once again!  :D

Thanks for your help!

Cool beans! I'll try to remember this thread if I ever get this condition happening on my track.
