Title: 4WD on 87 Samurai
Post by: 1eugene445 on September 04, 2006, 05:47:21 AM
My '87 Samurai slides into 4WD high range fiine, but sometimes won't go into 4WD low range. I start from a full stop, manually lock the front hubs, depress the clutch and try to move the transfer gear lever into the low range, and it won't go sometimes.  Does the regular 5 speed shifter have to be in any special position besides neutral?  Anybody got any ideas?  Could it be that the clutch is not disengaging enough although normal shifting is fine?

Replace the shifter sheet under the transfer case lever.

That would be my guess as well.

Hey Guys, give me a hint as to what the "shifter sheet" is. Are you talking about the rubber boot and the hold down plate around the transfer gear lever, or is it something underneath the floor boards?

no,  its a plastic or nylon cup thats under all that. you can see it if you take off the shifter.  new ones aren't a lot cause theyre a common problem.
