Title: Tracker build up, back space question
Post by: bkcraun on January 26, 2005, 12:30:06 AM
Doing a slight build on my Tracker. 1" coil spacers and a 2" body lift.  I'm going to be putting on 30 x 9.50 mud terrains and steel wheels.  I would like to order the wheels with back spacing to give me a wider stance than my stock rims.  What back spacing do I want?

For a mild build I would go with a 7" rim
and 3.75" backspace, these rims will work
for tires from those 30-9.5s thru 33-12.5s

I have 2.75" on 15x8rims with 30x10.5 tsl and I like the stance. ;D

So I am the dummy here but what is back space anyway? What do the numbers mean?

I have a 98 Tracker 2dr, 2" body lift with 235X15s that measure 29" inches on OEM alloys that look nice and I still have several inches clearance.  I was thinking of going to 31"s  or 32"s, on 15X7 rims.  How does backspacing affect it all?  I am even considering going to 16"X7 CJ rims and going with 16" tires to get the same effect.

Any comments?

I think CJ rims are the wrong wheel
stud spacing, and back space is the
distance from the wheel mounting
surface to the bead sealing surface.

a smaller back space will stick out
of the wheel well farther

I get it now.

As for the wheels.  CJ rims are the 46-86 years and the catalogs and specs I read all show the same 5X5.5 pattern as our trackicks so I am assuming they will work.

Comments?

Those will work if the center hole is 105mm
or 4-1/4" for the front hub to poke thru

OK so I can't just assume the rims are good just cuz the pattern is right.   so anyone know if CJ rims have the right hole size?  And does it matter if the hole size is larger than ours?

Larger, no, unless you want to
use the stock caps on the rear

Cj rims will work on a Kick. That is how I was originally tempted to make 33's fit on mine (stole some 33's of a friends CJ and put them on my kick.

I went with a 2.75" BS on my rims. 15x8, and 31x11.50 LTBs.
I love the look!

Looks good Cheif.  How much fender trimming did you have to do??

Backspacing.

"Normal" backspacing, us usually sojmething like half the rim width, minus a quarter inch (give or take).  That's because normally, the mounting surface of the wheel is just about "smack in the middle" of the rim.

So a 7 inch rim would normally have about 3.25 inches of backspacing - the distance from the inside edge of the rim, to the mounting surface.  An 8" wheel would run 3.75"

SO - the factory 5.5" rim has about 2.5 inches of backspacing.

When you put your big meats on, you don't want them sticking too far "in" to the wheel well, so you go with the same backspacing - 2.5 to 2.75 inches even though your rim has gone from 5.5" to 8" - that puts all the additional width outside the mounting surface.

Make sense?

Just behind the front tires, the usual place.

Actually cut the floorboard, and pounded the whole floorboard back. I actually had to pound the floorboard BACK in the wheelwell, because I could push the clutch in far enough!

Can you tell I'm not worried about Astetics?  ;D

Wasn't the factory steel rims 15x5.5" with 4" backspace IIRC ?

u can probly run those on stock rims but the back spacing makes a tracer so much more stable in turns. if u r going to buy get an 8" wide rim with 3" back spacing u can run up to a 12.50" wide tire with no problem. i use to run 31x13.5 TSL on these rims. get some chep white wagon wheels and rino line them with Wal-Mart special bedliner.
