Title: Alternator belt tension??
Post by: Tattoo on September 07, 2006, 09:04:53 AM
Hello,

I just replaced my alternator.  I used a big hammer handle to put tension
on it.  I basically put as much tension as I could on it and called it good.

Can you put "too much" tension on the belt or parts?  It works great.

Thanks for the input.

Too much tension will wear out the bearings.

You should be able to move the belt a little bit, if you grab it in the middle of 2 pullies, I'd say about 1/2" either way is good.
