Title: Vacuum pump, any way to test?

Is there a good way to test the vacuum pump mounted to the front bumper to see if its pulling good vacuum?

Can it be ditched for a mechanical system? I think a mechanical engaging system would be much more reliable and you would be 100% sure its engaged.

Any help would be good as I'm ready to beat it into submission with the 20 lb swing press!

just put a vacuum gauge/pump on it to make sure you are getting good vacuum from the engine and then put the pump onto the unit and apply vacuum using the pump and see if it engages ok. there is a company that makes a mechanical system but only for full size american trucks..... can't seem to remember the brand.

a hand held vacuum pump will have a vacuum gauge on it as well. it can be used for applying vacuum to a solenoid or valve or to measure how much vacuum you are getting at a certain component.

If you are referring to the front diff actuator then its pressure operated. I have this set up on mine but I've no idea where the pump was located on the original vehicle. You should be able to feel pressure if you put your finger over the outlet. If the diff isn't functioning correctly then I suspect an air leak.

Are you sure it's pressure and not vacuum? I blew up a small ballon and placed it over the line the line to the diff (on the pump) and it evacuated it and started pulling the ballon in the line!!!

I'm taking it to a friends shop tonight, going to get to the bottom of it!!!

Its 11pm Thursday here, I'll double check it at the w/e.

Just got back from my friends shop, put a vacuum gauge on the pump, it pulled 10" of vacuum. Installed a hand operated vacuum pump and pulled it all the way to 30" of vacuum, diff won't engage.

I guess I'll have to open it up and see whats going on!

Any body have a blow up of the front diff in a 99-05 tractara?????
