Title: Picnic Table revisited, the Flea's turn. (automatics are kick ass)
Post by: Quaddawg on September 16, 2006, 12:13:19 PM
I played around on this table when I first got my 31's on the Turtle, so I figured I would see if the Flea could do it with it's lowly 4.30 gears..

To my surprise, it climbed it much less dramatically than the Turtle, and it's 5.62's.  I guess the automatic and it's torque converter is what does it, but it's super easy for the auto to climb this table, where as with the manual, it takes a fair bit of clutch slipping. I am sure with TC gears the manual would be much better...  BUT, I am thinking that withh TC gears, the AUTO would just rule.

Anyone wheel with an auto, 31's or better, and low TC gears?

The neighbors think I have lost my mind... especially when I cruised the Flea up on top of the table, and then sat down on the other side and started inspecting and poking around the front end..... lol

my 96 had 31x12.50 boggers and 4.24 case with an auto and i felt that it absolutly needed the tc gears to move those tires.I think the 5 speeds are way lower but yet the auto's are way easier. my 4 door has an auto and instead of swapping in some 5.12's i will definatly get the 4.24's again for easy trail riding and comfort.

Autos are much less common than the 5 speeds in the trackers. I have only seen a few autos in the pick and pull, but I have seen lots of 5 speeds.

my 89 on 31's does alright with all stock gearing and an auto, but im getting 5.12 ring and pinions soon, and the calmini t-case gearset when i can afford it. eventually, im swapping a 12 bolt rear axle in it, and getting 5.83:1 ring and pinions, then i'll be able to climb trees! lol  8)

Nope, no ramps.

I have a video of the Turtle doing it..  here:

I will try to get my boy to help me get a vid of the Flea going up, it's  MUCH smoother

The flea did a good job getting up there

little bit slower and more controlled with the auto

(i also like the different lawn shots)

I love my auto with 31s and 5.12 dif gears.  It was pitiful really with the stock gearing on hill climbs.  Your 16 valves should help too though!   Tcase gears might be the way to go though, if you want to keep this one more street friendly.
Autos are definitely the way to go for our terrain.  I've seen many a manual Zuk not make a hill, cause he let out just enough to shift gears.
Flea looks good, Quaddawg!  Should make a sweet rig!

I'm running an auto with 4.24 t-case gears 5.12 diff gears and 34 swampers. It rocks off road ;D but sucks on road :( I get a kick out of the look on peoples faces when it upshifts on a steep hill climb :o

I get strange looks when I park on top of those concrete things in the parking lot :). I also get strange looks when I am driving up a grade on the freeway and I have to use 3rd gear :P.

hey quaddawg, just wondering, how did you come up with the names for your trackicks? the license plates on mine say turtle, but thats because my friends call me a turtle due to my lack of fast cars (at least until i started buying rx-7's).  :) so my sidekick is the turtle-mobile.  ;D

I get them from comments people make.

Every always said the green one looked like a turtle crawling up around, and my boy said the new one looks like a flea next to my tow rig... so..... the names stick...  sounds better than "the green one" and the "black one"

lol...
