I have an 88 Sammi and the heat only works on the passenger side. The driver's side blows cold air but the passenger side blows hot air.
Any ideas?

all i gotta say is, thats weird. unless your not talking about the feet heaters. my upper vents don't blow hot at all, i don't think they're suppose to
-
Bad heater core??????
-
I pretty sure heat is only suppose to come out the defrost and the vent below the radio. If heat is suppose to come out the vent your talking about, I would think you had a clog.

Yes, samurais heat only comes from the defrosters and the lower vents. The lower vents are literally right off the heater core so it is impossible to not have heat one one side of the truck there. On the upper vents, defrosters, I guess it can be possible. Just look at yout heater box and make sure that the tube that runs up to those vents is attached and such. Another thing to check is on the ds side of the box, an old sammi trick is to cut a hole in the box and vacuum off the heater core to get rid off all the debris that falls in there. Just take a look and if you have a hole make sure it is sealed good with some duct tape or similar. Prolly half the sammis that I see have this"mod" done, so something to look into

ya sammy dash vents only blow cold air, they dont toss heat out. I would do what others said cut hole just above heatercore, and use a vacume to suck out all the debris that can get in there, I am about to do the same thing.

why does mine blow cold air out the top and hot air on the bottom, at same time?

My heat only works on the passenger side. Period. I do not know why it is like this but when I turn on the heat at the floor or the defroster it blows cold air out the driver side.
I do have a hole on the driver side and it looks like someone tried cleaning it out at one time. I have sealed this hole and it does not make a difference.
Where are the tubs that run to the vents at? Can I see them from the engine or do I have to take off the dash to get to them?
I have been looking for a picture of an enginde showing where the heat tubes enter and I cannot find anything.

If you only have heat on one side in both Defrost and low mode, then your heater core is probably bad. I had to replace mine a whlie back after accidentally putting a screw threw it while mounting some wiring, and it's not to hard of a task. ;D

Anyone have good instructions on replacing a heater core?
Or does anyone know if I have to remove the dash to check the ducts for my heat?
-
I have a heater related question. on my 86 tintop sammy, defrost on full blast is not throwing out much hot air. is that common to samurai heating systems?

Usually the lack of airflow means something is clogged up. Do you see decent airflow when you are using the feet mode?

You shouldn't have to remove the dash, and taking the heater core out is pretty simple. The shop manual has really good instructions, I can probably pick it up and scan the pages this weekend if nobody else posts them.

front air and bottom airflow is great. I was just wondering if the defrost is supposed to be under the amount of airflow that the other airflow selections have.
thankyou for your reply.
