So I'm STILL debating between leaf and coil springs for my SAS, and I was wondering what everyone thinks about Jeep coils. Would lifted cherokee front springs (here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=33585&item=7947157350&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW)) and lifted TJ rear springs (here (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7946934106&ssPageName=MERC_VI_RSCC_Pr4_PcN__Stores)) be soft enough for use on a Sidekick?

Coils are more flexy than leafs,
I find teh 2" lifted TJ springs from
BDS are fine in the back, just a little
too tall without a Slip Yoke Eliminator

hrm... maybe i will go with coils if I can't find leafs cheaper.
On a side note, has anyone used the heims off a tractor's 3-point hitch as links? Would they work? They seem to be cheaper than heims sold at offroad shops.

Dude, I got some XJ fronts I'll let go cheap for your fronts if you want em. I didn't like em in the back of my Trackick.

Not sure WTF was up w/ my camera!  :o
EDIT: they where too stiff in the rear of my light tracker, but I think they'd be ok in the front. Also, I know part of the problem was I used the wrong shocks.

Are they stock? If so, how long do they measure?
-
i got my heims off ebay you can find deals on heimjoints, i was getting 4 for under $30 sometimes you have to go to view sellers other items to find 3/4'' heims,
and i replaced my tracker joint w/a 3/4'' heim

See, with the hitch thing, I found a bar that my dad had bought out in the garage with a pricetag on it for $20. Granted it was only about 2 feet long, but it did have some pretty decent sized heims on it.
I'm going out in the garage in a little bit, I'll see if I can snap a pic of it.

I've seen a few Jeep TJ owners build their own arms with the Tractor Supply heims. These heims are not designed for the forces of a suspension. They are designed for a maximum pressure sort of deal, but not the 'jolt' the front axle gets when it hits bumps.
What happens is the starts to come apart. The ball comes out of the jacket and this leaves lots of play.
Best thing I've found was to go to several web sites of forums. Go through the Jeep forums also. There are lots of sellers for heims. Plus there are lots of 'johnny joint' sellers. I would prefer the johnny over the heim as they are owner rebuildable.

Stock, and they are 5.5" longer then the stock trackick rears, whatever that is!!
I can get an exact number tomorrow, I think.
Edit: As far as heims go, get the good stuff. Don't skimp on these, because when they DO give way (and they will) it has a good possability to take out more then just the joint, ler alone any bodily harm!
There's a really cool 1 link type suspension I'm thinkin about doin on my trackick some day. Details are here (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283119).

What kind of joint would you use in a one-link setup? I'd imagine it has to be pretty damn beefy, as it's taking all the pressure that's normally spread out among 7 or 8 joints. I've skimmed through that thread before, but I guess I never really paid much attention.

They're has been talk of a grader ball, basically a 2" receiver hitch kinda ball that has a 2 piece fitting that clamps around the ball. HEAVY dudty stuff!
Also there is a threaded end with bushing on either side of the mount. It's set up like the radius arms on a ford. I plan to go that route (w/ the threaded arms and bushings) if I ever do it! 8)

That seems too hard to get set up correctly... if I go coils, I'll probably do 3 link in the rear, and a 2 link with panhard in the front (ala RRO Sammy coil conversion)

That'll be a good setup. You can wrist one of the 2 links (pass side I think) and get TONS more flex outta the front!

Wrist one of the two links? ??? I'm a coil newb, care to elaborate on that?

A joint which can move side to side or up/down as well as twist. (like a wrist)

Half right! The wristed arm is a Ford Radius arm that has a hinge that moves up and down, allowing the axle/suspension to move freely, and have almost 0 bindage!

This is the arm pinned.

Here it is unpinned. Off road only!!

how did any of you get the jeep coils to work? I got some cherokee coils and they are quite a bit bigger in doa then the stock rears. I can't see how they would seat on the axle end. plus the top is smaller in dia than the stock one?

My Cherokee coils were not smaller up top?  But I bought them and was told that they were Cherokee coils, I did not pull them off of a Cherokee ???  Is your ride a Sport.  1998 Sports have a larger DIA up top then my Kick (So I'm told) .  My coils actually sit on the axle and wrap around the bucket right now.  I plan on making new buckets and moveing the top bucket rearward once I get settled on the suspension set up.  It functions well now as is but not designed as a perminent long term set up.
