Title: Neglected Sammi
Post by: Spyvie on September 24, 2006, 10:44:10 AM
I thought I’d post this pic just to see if it’s the worst rotor anyone has ever seen…

This Sammi has been sitting in my folk’s back yard for a couple of years, it used to be my Gramp’s hunting rig. My half-wit brother drove it for a while then parked it in the back yard, he’s responsible for the condition it was in when I took over. The truck has 154000 miles on it but about 30000 of those were towed behind Gramp’s motorhome. Gramps has a thing about putting mud flaps and bug deflectors and other superfluous geegaws on his cars, as it sat it had hubcaps on the stock wheels and like a fool I didn’t take them off and look at the brakes before I drove it.

I gave gramps $50 for the title, charged the battery and hosed down the carb with some cleaner, aired up the tires then dumped a couple of gallons of regular in the tank and it fired right up. I drove it out of the back yard then around the block and it seemed ok enough to drive carefully to my place, so off I went on the 18 mile trip.

On the way home I noticed that the brakes were pulling a little to the right so I put her up on jackstands, pulled the front wheels and this is what I found on the right side. I can’t believe it didn’t come apart on me! The edges are literally knife thin.

No local auto parts stores had rotors in stock but luckily I found some in great condition for $15 each at a junkyard.

But, you got it back to being roadworthy and can drive it now!  Others (probably not on this board) would have just thrown in the towel and junked it.  Send us more pics as things improve, won't ya?

Those are pretty bad. But at 154,000 miles-30,000, it is just getting broken in, as these things will last forever. BTW, what year is it?

She’s an 88 with a bent tailgate… this is how she sat for the last two years.

She had a new timing belt and clutch about 4000 miles ago, the motor runs pretty darn good with no visible smoke.

So far I’ve changed the oil, using Castrol 75000+ 10w 40, replaced the front wheel bearings and the pads/rotors, and did the cold/hot idle speed adjustment.  Now the clutch cable is starting to go so I’ll have to order one of those.

The only other problem I’m having is no instrument/horn/dome power but the fuse is OK. Gunna have to track that down next weekend.

Not sure what I’m going to do about the tailgate yet, I was thinking about removing it along with the damaged bumper and mounting some kind of locking box in the bed.

wow nasty rotor, but nice to see a sammy get back on the road!! keep us posted!

John

Tailgate you can get pretty cheap around, do a search for Rods samurai salvage in Iowa.  He might have one decent price.
