i'm in the process of fitting a locker to my rear diff, and i'm going to get the uni joints in the rear tail shaft done too while i'm at it.
question is, when i take the shaft out of the gear box, do i need to mark it and install it back the same on the splines? i know of the sammy slip joints you need to have them put back in the same, but what about the vits/trackicks....
also, my rear drums are really farked. rusted and seized. i want to do a disc conversion, but i may not have enough resources to get it done. so i'm just planning on getting the drums over hauled, new cylinder, new pads, and i was told the springs need to be OEM. what a PITA.

I've just pulled the shaft and installed it anyway it fit. Have not had a problem.
The drive shaft should be self balanced so the placement shouldent matter.
As for the rear brakes, my drums work ok for me, but I also want to go to disc because the mud tears up the shoes within 8 months. I've also used a after market spring kit and have had no problems with it.

wipe off both ends and look for a DOT.

I've taken mine off lots of time's without marking it and never had any drive line vibes after. Sammys are a little different obviously with the slip shaft on the drive shaft it self. Try find the grease-able U-joints if you can, they last longer while playing in the water.

in the shop manual, it says there is a mark already. i will have a look, if its there, good, if not, i dont think i'll worry too much about it.
