Well, I am willing to install one of these badboys
Can anyone here recommend one that is:
1. Easy to find
2. Looks good
3. Easy to install
:D
I want to find one that I can move the top piece so that I can turn it backwards when driving in the rain
merci!
PS I have the 2.0L engine and the airbox is on the passenger side
I heard the Toyota 4 runner from the late 90's snorkle could fit

Give this a read from the XL-7 list

No disrespect... but I wanted a more traditional looking snorkel, an ARB style one with a top that I can adjust by turning it around for Rain & Wind
Also I might not want to incur the shipping costs to send one over from Taiwan
Any other models that might fit?

Their were ARB styled ones in their and as for the shipping to the US total cost was no more than buying are ARB snorkle from RRO .

I got one from VTTR about 5 months ago. I don't think i'm gonna keep. I paid 215.00 plus 50.00 shipping.
I might sell it if anyone is interested.

I know nothing about snorkels at all, do you have to turn all of them around when you drive in the rain?
-
do you have a internet site? i dont find it!
-

i dont find you snorkel and is a japenise site!! do you have a us site??? or the link for the right parts?
-
Here is a picture of the VTTR snorkel. This is not my truck but it's the exact same snorkel I have.
-
why are you going to sell it? :o, if the australian GV had arieal in a different spot i would have the same snorkel as u :)

bah... i personally don't get the whole snorkel obsession. to each is own obviously but i mean how many people really submerge their grand vitara to the point that one is needed. then again i've contemplated a safari rack and i doubt that would see a lot of use... maybe if i thought snorkels looked good i'd change my mind. But then again at least people would have a hard time knowing if i used my rack very often... unlike a shinny truck with mint interior and a snorkel... it's to painfully obvious that they have never been used. there are always exceptions of course.

breath man breath!! thats what youre zuk does.
reasons for a snorkel
1 when on dirt roads the dust is thickist whare the factory air intake is!
2 as with my unit the snorkel rams the air into my engine thus making the car get up and
go better through the gears , its not alot but i drive everyday and have a lead foot so i can
feel it
3 u never know when u will need it, i did not have it on last zuk and went in many deep
puddles when i was not expecting watar
4 in aus all tracks a ripped up by #*|removethispart|@* in lifted toyotas making ruts, tracks and puddles
very deep
plus 80% of #*|removethispart|@* i see everyday with lifted trucks cant drive for sh#t and make fun of me and my zuk, so i like to make it look a bit capable
unlike a shinny truck with mint interior and a snorkel... it's to painfully obvious that they have never been used.
I got it new ( bling ) and i get it dirty alot plus i have 2( almost 3 ) kids who drive me nuts!!
, so i like to shine the sh#t out of it!!!
plus im going to sell zuk stuff ,so it needs to look clean
sorry for the rant i got off the issue , anyway this is the first zuk i could get a snorkel.
next on list is a safari rack!!

breath man breath!! thats what youre zuk does.
you are quite right... i do need to breathe. i re-read my post and realized it sounded like someone pissed in my cheerios that morning. my apologies.
anyway, i never considered the fact that a snorkel would allow better breathing (ram air effect)... interesting.

The ram air effect is opposed by the increased resistance to airflow in the tube, and the performance is reduced by the air resistance of the tube when the vehicle is in motion.
As far as the first point, tests have shown that optimised ram air inlets only begin to give benefit at 125 mph. A snorkel is far from optimised. So scratch that one.
If you have a snorkel to keep water out of the inlet, ensure cooler air and reduce dust intake, you are better off with the aperture facing the rear. It will take in less rain and give less wind resistance.
-
fit the snorkel and see , i fitted air ram type because i the aireal is in the way on the a piller or i would have the swept back design,im sure it will work aswell , and to the drag mine creates it felt fine on the freeway , which i see about once a month ,but u can state all the tests u want ,my car feels better and im happy with that!!
-
The whole "ram" air thing I can understand with an engine that moves alot of air... such as high displacement V8's
Or even small high revving engines such as the new 1litre bikes such as the ZX10R etc...
I know for fact that the airbox is far from the limiting factor... I just ripped mine apart and especially now w/o a splash guard I can see that there is a really really large inlet to the airbox
I think again that that snorkle is really important for fording deep water and that really alone is the benefit of it (asides from it's pretty coool look)
Another thing I wanted to mention was... well how well do our vehicles ford deep water? I mean if you get to the point of submerging a lifted (such as mine) water inlet... water is already pretty damned hihgh and likely as high as the fuse box, the injectors and the mass air sensors
Anybody want to elaborate on how to truely "waterproof" our trucks?
-
in my 2L softtop ,( with 2 inch lift and 225/75/r16s ) i twice went through a puddle 10 meters long and had the water just over my winshield wipers and the car was fine
( had fingers crossed at the time ), the 92 1.6 vitara behined me filled up with water.
this does not include the countless times i did dohnuts in the muddy water, but at the time nobody made snorkels for them so if the engine drank i would be stuffed!!

I've heard of an engine continuing to run with the fuses and battery top submerged. The thing is, the water was fresh and probably quite clear, so nothing to conduct electricity (distilled water is not a conductor). Don't try it in sea water!!!
The vehicle did get some problems with the lights. The risk is that dirt will get washed into items and short things out. I don't plan to try it ;)
-
i've had mine in deep water many times, muddy and clean water.. water has never gone through the filter but the box has been wet inside.. the only time water has ever seen the wrong side of my air filter is when i waste my time checking it and shit leaks in. i'm not opposed to the snorkel idea though but i feel the the money could be better spent elsewhsere. so far my truck is fairly water resistant but it's got less than 40,000km on it, who knows how this will go as it gets older... mind you my starter has gone already, the fan clutch, my clutch makes noise for a bit after muddy water..
-
Mine has been way over the bonet in water in salt/muddy water. I had no electric problem, but the pulleys were shot. Wasn't cheap to change. Remember mine is the diesel version. But I got through the puddle many times ;D
-
on my 2L vitara softtop i did two pullys but no problems with fuses!!
for more on the snorkels this site might help it is in english but is in australia outdoorauto.com.au (http://outdoorauto.com.au)

Alrighty guys....
I called and he said he would like me to checkout his father in-laws GV in a month
It's been testing for over 40 days, and they had a problem with 1 shock (8hr offroading a day)
I'm hoping to see it... however there might be a couple milestones to work out before production
1. with the front diff re-location, he wants to ensure that the carrier (3rd member) will not have a problem with the drop bracket
2. Iron out the link system in the rear, he'll be using Curry Johnny joints for the links on the axel, but now will be using poly-urethane on the frame as currently having both... is great for flex, but terrible for absorbing any bumps
Looks like he'll be making his own A arms and has possibly found a strut rather than the dual wishbone... which will make the bolt on far simpler as there will be no relocation of the coil and the stock knuckle can still mount to a strut
we'll see...
However... his kit for 89-98 is complete and he just made a solid axel conversion kit for it as well (might make one for the GV dependant on demand)
personally.... I'll wait for this, seeing how I'm content enough with my 2" coil spacers
-
I hope everyone is investing in breather lines for there axles also ;D

-
I believe GV's come with raised diff breathers however I know the front one is only as high as the top of the radiator and I haven't gone looking for the rear one.
-
gv rear diff breather is behined one of the tail light, no diff brethter kits needed!!
-
The rear one ends inside in the back where the jack is.

Well then your all set, unless some wire decides its time to short or blow out.
We just hope that never happens.
