I just got my 96 kick today and i want to change all oils as soon as I can. I was wondering what oils you guys use in the tranny, transfer case and differentials? I wanna go with all synthethic but im not sure wich grade and weight to use. (keep in mind ill be running mostly in cold conditions)

I'm not sure how well zuk's like syn. gear lube, the stock GL5 say a 75-80 would be good for the winter,I pulled mine appart after 113000 miles and the transfer case gears looked like new, have heard about problems with other than stock type. oh ya it's minus four deg. here now.

So your saying to NOT use synthethic??
-
I don't use synth in the Gnewt, even with the 4.24:1 Lo in the transfer case, and 5.83's and ARB's in the diffs.
I just pour in some Valvoline...umm...75W90? yeah, I think that's it.

I'm interested in this topic too. Gonna be changing the oils/lubes in my track/kick ASAP as well. I know a lot of people run Redline MT-90 (which is synthetic) in 240sx tranny's (which is my other car I'm building up). Everyone seems to love that, so that's what I was gonna run in both the 240 and the Tracker... If someone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks in advance,
Bryan

Man, that red-line stuff is EXPENSIVE!!! And in my opinion, definitely not worth it!
BUT - I change my oils every year. Time's coming up real soon - just before Moab EJS.

Ive been told that full synthethic GL5 75w-90 will be perfect in both differentials, transfercase and manual tranny. Does that sound right to you?
Even though the owners book says GL4 for tranny and transfer case, but GL5 for diffs.

Gotta go with Bob on this one. If you wheel your rig, especially in water situations, you are much better off using dino juice and changing on a yearly basis than using synthetic and going for extended intervals.

I would say that's false. I know 240's call for GL4 in the tranny because they have brass syncros in them. If you use GL5, it will eat away at the syncros. I would assume the same for the Track/Kick since it calls for GL4 also.

It's like $7-8 a quart. The tranny would only take like 1 quart, maybe 1.5 max (haven't looked up the capacity yet). I don't think that's that bad for silky smooth shifting, I just wondered how true the statement above was that said not to use synthetic. I've heard nothing but good stuff about it. I know I run Mobil 1 oil in my 240 and I love it. Haven't had an ounce of trouble out of it. It's got 220k miles on the original motor.

Ya after reading my tracker manual, it says gl4 for trans and transfer case and gl5 for diffs, so that sounds good. when I had my transfer case rebuilt they said to run gl5 in it, but it is also not mated like the trackers x-fer so maybe it is ok in a stand alone type transfer case. also trail tough was the one who rebuilt it and said they had some failures with synthetic gear lube in them, not sure if they broke them in first with regular and then switched to syn. or went streight to syn.? I would call Brent and ask him.

So the local mecanik did not have any GL4 in the full synthec. So I called a few distributors to find out they dont produce GL4 anymore. Called the local suzuki dealer and they told me they cant get GL4 neither and thats why they have been using GL5 for a few years now. So I went with Full Synthec Quackerstate 75w-90 GL5, I hope it wont damage anything.

I would just recommend you have oil in the truck before running it.  Any further than that, JUST PUT SOME STINKIN LUBE IN THE TRUCK AND DRIVE IT! If your Makin' it Hert like you should be it'll just be a 50-50 mix of mud and water anyhow 8)

diff/xfer case oil had me wondering too ... good thread.
I'm doing the syn thing with the lube in the diffs when I swap in the new gears/spool. I'm fine with yearly changes (aka 100 hours off/on road), as long as things don't blowup cuz it's syn. About all I see is syn 75-90 ...
