Title: XJ coils
Post by: Chief on January 05, 2005, 08:55:47 PM
 :o

These suckers are LONG. Measures 5.5" longer then the stock ones, side by side. Prolly at least 3" of lift. I got a bit of a rake now! I got that balljoint spacer, so I was able to get em in there pretty easy. I captured the bottom of the coil, and it looks like it runs out of travel right before the coil pops out of the top mount. Just need to modify my shock mount, and add new shocks.

Going to move the upper mounts towards the back of the trackick by drilling the frame out and adding a bolt so I can go eyelet to eyelet, and get rid of the upper threaded mount.  ;D

Front or rear of your trackick? TJ coils are way too low in spring rate to use on a wishbone type aplication. there is about triple the load on a wishbone or strut set up than a dirrect conect to the axle. Due to the leverage of the arm past the spring. they will work on the rears though and you can use Ranger or explorer coils on the front. I think, If I remember correctly, maybe, ??? Hey whitfeild ;D

Thanks

The small Jeep Cherokees are called XJ's.
Square light Jeep Wranglers are YJ's
97 on Jeep Wranglers are TJ's
Grand Cherokees are ZJ's

How did you get the springs to fit around the bumb stops.  The XJ spring's center is skinnier than the kicks?

Yes I know I was a jeep guy long before Zuks I just read the post wrong. I still think I am right but can't say for sure. there are few soid axle springs that will work with a wish bone system.

but its a jeep and its trail rated it can go anywhere and your little toy car can't even hang on the easy trails and......... you think you can get on top of that rock so you can spend your time and $ and winch me out of this preDICKament I got myself into with your real cool little mega wheeler.

thats when the KY is needed

Thanks but no thanks

Yes, coils are for the rear. I can get pics tomorrow after work. And the coils fit around the bumpstops just fine. I forgot to put the coil spring pad isolator thingie back in, so I get a little clunk now. But then again, I might be getting the clunk from something else. I dunno! Nor do I care.  ;D

Need to get some eyelet to eyelet shocks tomorrow, and drill a couple holes in the frame, sleeve them, then bolt on those shocks.

Next up: Divorced Sammi t-case!

I have always used, XJ (Cherokee) fronts for my 4-dr rear  (With the upper link spacer).  I also have a set of TJ fronts for teh rear.  Never had any troubles with the fit, but they are a little larger then the DIA of the stock coils.

I just bought a sety of 2"+ Cherokee fronts,  Ebay.

I'm swappoing those into the rear and moving my 2" coil spacer on top of my 2"+  Explorer front coils.

Hoping to get the 36's under their with room to move.

Can't wait to see this divorced Sammy T-case mentioned above.  I'm looking at a similar non divorced set up.

I'm still runningthe slip yoke but with a D-shaft spacer.

I can make a SYE in short order and will probally do so next time I have the T-case out.

That's alot of lift! When do the stock lower links max out in down travel? I can't get much more out of mine with the stock XJ coils in there, or so I think.

I'm gonna use the stock driveshaft as the intermediate shaft between the 2wd tranny and sammi case, then modify the existing front shaft (lengthen it) then gonna use the slip splined shaft from a sammy extended with the material left over from shorting the stock rear shaft. All with Tracker flanges. I thought I got a pre 86 sammi case, but I got a post 86 case with the big flanges.

Lower arms are maxed now, The angle they run  cause the rear wheel to try to walk  under the truck and lift the front.   I'll be remaking the lowers at the same time.  Just trying to find a free local parts donor for the necessary frame brackets.

My current lower arms are +1.5,  Upper is + 2" all to keep the big tires out of the back door.  Yes the springsa are doing the Limbo.  I'll remake the upper & lower buckets soon enough.

Darrin,
I think we sent you 2" lifted TJ front springs.

We are using YJ's all the way around on our kick now.

Okay... I'm not getting all this to well..

So If I was use XJ front springs on my tracker rear it'll fit? What is this ball joint spacer I hear about? And lastly the TJ springs? if you use them how much lift will it give? Are they stock springs?

Right now I have 2" longer springs and a 1" spacer for the rear and front. So if I put the XJ springs in the rear it will raise it up around 3" or a little more?

What mods do I have to do to get them in and what do I have to watch out for? Right now in the rear I have XJ front shocks mounted for the extra travel and to make it stiffer for all the camping gear I truck along.

My brother has a stock XJ parted so I can get my hands on the stock springs east so any way to clear this up would be great

You tell us. Shoot some pics, and don't forget about before and after measurements. This is the important part.
With free stuff, it's rather just time consuming to swap and see. Take those front XJ coils, place them in the rear and tell us.

The joint referenced is the upper link joint located on top of the differential. By lifting you basically are binding this link.

1.  What is this ball joint spacer I hear about?

4.   If I put the XJ springs in the rear it will raise it up around 3" or a little more?

5.   What mods do I have to do to get them in?

1.  Rear axle upper link spacer, Place the ball joint plate spacer on top of the Thrid member where the link bolts to the 3rd member housing.

2.  3" -   5"  depends on what Kick you are placing them on, how they rest on the axle (XJ's are alittle big for the stock Side kick lower spring cups) and how much weight you are carrying.

3.  yes,  stock spring.

4.  See #2

5.  Yes you will need the rear axle ball joint spacer see #1   Here is a picture of the one I made below.

Okay Thanks for all the help.

Now here's another question. Say we take the average and it goes up 4" in the rear, I build myself the diff ball joint extender.

Now I have 3" of suspension life right now in the front. and I still have the independent front. 2" springs and 1" spacer.

I've had the CV blow on me before and I will be putting the 1" spacer plate on the short shaft to give it more play.. is 3" max for my front? or what is the way to get more.. with out blowing everything to bits or going to SAS... and having the wheels have major positive camber?

Is this even posible without major fab work?

I think that XJ's and TJ's fronts are nearly identical.

I'd like to know if anybody has ever directly compared them.

I remember our TJ's and have seen XJ's and they look damn near the same in diameter, length and coil thickness.

Anybody have any input on that ?

I got a set of each and they are similar but TJs are a bit longer and have a bit different twist.  I never put em on a spring compresion tester but I think the Tj are a bit softer too judging by the ride after the swap only. They provided about 1" lift on my stock XJ. Oh and they were 6 cyl hard top too.

Thanks

Well, I'm taking out my XJ coils. I don't like em. They're too stiff. The rear end is ALL over the place when I get any type of speed. It's all over the road.

Time to go back to the stock coils, 2" spacer, and I'm gonna add some tricks!

Probably the wrong ones....

28" long, Skyjacker, for a dodge 1/2 ton 4" lift. Only thing I could find in the right length.

But even with these, when I hit a good sized dip (not a bump) the truck would countinue bouncing after I hit it, like if I had no shocks on at all, just not as bad.
