Title: tracker gears in sammy
Post by: 95tracker on November 06, 2006, 05:47:22 PM
I am going to buy R&P's for my tracker but with in the next year i plan on doing a SAS and i am going to use a sammy axle because it will be cheaper and i dont get to extreme off road. I was wondering if anybody knew of the R&P's out of the front of a tracker would fit in the front of a sidekick?

Also are the T-case gear the same. I know the sammy is divorced and the tracker is not but i was hoping that they are bcause if they were i would just buy a sammy 4:1 kit and get high and low reduction instead of buying the 4.24:1 and R&P's. I would just get the T gears.

tracker and sidekick gears are the same.  tracker or sidekick front gears will fit in both the front and rear of a samurai. tracker and sidekick tcase gears will not fit a samurai tcase.

Also I will add the sidekick /  tracker rear is  around three inches wider than the sammi axles. You would just have to use wheel spacers on the sammi axle if its an issue for you.

although there is a different spline count from sammy to sidekick, just remember that if you're switching entire thirds.

Depending on the year of tracker/sidekick and samurai.....all samurai front sidegears are 22 spline, all samurai rear sidegears are 26 spline.....tracker/sidekick front sidegears may be either 22 or 26 spline (depending on the year).  So if you are lucky enough to find a trackick front third with 26 spline sidegears, they will be a direct bolt-in into the rear of a samurai.

I believe the 26 spline is the 96 and up models.

I am only going to put the sami axle in the front for the solid axle but i am going to take the ring and pinions out of the front of my tracker and put in the sami font axle. i was hoping that the tracker 3rd would fit in the sami axle.

It will, but you might not like the results.

Any kind of abuse will cause the aluminum third housing to break - which might result in Ring and Pinion damage.  The aluminum housing is not designed to work in that kind of high-stress situation.

The best choice is to transplant the Ring and Pinion into a Steel Samurai third.   This will require a spacer/"can" kit available at many vendors along with a dif rebuild kit (hey you'll have it apart -- might as well rebuild it or have it rebuilt).

Hope this helps!

Bottom line....yes, the complete tracker front third will bolt into a samurai front axle.

Ahh, the aluminum tracker third vs. the steel samurai third debate.....

Here is my opinion.....I agree the aluminum third is not as strong as the steel third.  And since I have not actually ever ran a tracker aluminum third, I can't say how much abuse it will take before it breaks.  In reality, I would say 90% of the people that will give you their opinion on the aluminum vs. steel third, have never ran an aluminum third themselves.

And what is the definition of abuse (or too much abuse)?   IMO, unless you are just bashing rocks and/or driving like a complete idiot, the aluminum third will work fine in the front axle.
If you have the $$, swap the gears over to a steel third....if you don't have the $$, run the aluminum third and use some common sense, and hope it will be ok.
Your results may vary.

I'm not bashing your opinion, ack, just putting my .02 worth in.

I ran the aluminum third for over a year without any problems.  The only reason I upgraded was because I bought an ARB from another Zuki member.  :)
