Title: HEY WILD, I gotta Turbo Question
Post by: Zukipilot on January 12, 2005, 10:29:07 PM
A friend of mine at a local Motorcycle shop is getting into building WRX's. He had has his for about 6 months now and has done alot to the stock boost ( Higher fuel flow, higher boost, bigger cooler, and a few other things he mentioned that I know nothing about)

Here is the thing. He is ordering a completely new, much larger Turbo set up that will give him alot more power than building up the stocker.

He told me last night that if I found someone to install it for him that he would GIVE me his built stock stuff.

Do you have any idea of what it would cost to have someone install a complete aftermarket turbo? Would it be worth the trouble? Would a WRX turbo ba adaptable to a Zuki?

Thanks,

Zig

I think that a WRX turbo would be unfit for use on a Sidekick, and you should immediately confiscate it and send it to me to be disposed of properly ;D

Sure, you can adapt it. You can get a manifold here probably. Or make your own with weld-el's, like Im doing. Im working on a Garrett T3 system with an eclipse intercooler, right now.

What is the CC dsplacement of a WRX ?
I find that a close match will give better
results with a turbo, as far as lag and
spool up, tho most stock turbos are on the
conservative side in those properties, but
the WRX is a little hotter than most off the
shelf turbo vehicles, so it might not be as
low key as some others.

In my years of study on turbos and systems,
I have come to the feeling that a turbo from
a 1.8 to a 2.0 and 2.2 Mazda would probably
work quite well. One thing to think about is
where do you want the boost to be, I think
most of us need more grunt on the highway,
and with the gearing and RPMs we turn on the
highway, the lag is not nearly as much of a problem
as it could be if you were Drag Racing or other
street style racing (Tracks only please) so I would
take the WRX turbo stuff, if for nothing else trade
value, you know somebody out there is going to
want it, and trade you for a smaller (if needed)
turbo as well as some other cash for your upgrades

Cost for an install, well  I'd say 2 days and shop rates
for those days, plus tuning, unless this is supported
by the owner or the upgrade Co. that sold the system

I'd say good trade, with the info I have

The WRX has a 1994 cc engine, and doesn't spool quickly until about 3200 rpm.

EDIT:  This is assuming it isn't a WRX STi, which has a 2.5 liter engine, and a larger turbo.

OK, this goes back to my statement
Subaru is a higher output than most
off the shelf turbo vehicles (as I suspected)

A little smaller turbo would give better
spool up, and lower RPM boost

Is yours TB/FI? Because I was thinking of switching over to simplify putting my T3 on (I was going to box the carb for a blow through).

If it is how'd you set it up?

Cool , thanks for the info. I dont think I would want to spend the cash on shop time to get something to trade off. If I could do the work I would, but I'll let it slide.
