So since we cant go to the x-mass tree run we decided to go up to Detroit today and get a tree. I invited a few people but Val was the only one not busy. So we decided to head up towards Elk Lake since val had never been up there and I hadnt been in many years.
Well all was going well, we hit the turn off on wet pavement and aimed towards the lake. We got to the gravel turnoff and noticed a small group of Jeeps airing down. We had seen these same jeeps a couple times on the way up too. Anyway being in Zook's we just started going up. we got about 1/2-1/3 mile up the road before we started getting into some snow.
Having fun in 2wd we sliped,spun and battled our way another 1/8th mile before realizing we needed 4wd. The snow was about 1 foot deep at this point.

So being in 4wd and both locked all up we starting crawling up the mountain again. OK so we were like a pinball in a bad game. Boing boing boing off the fullsize ruts. Well we came to a Tahoe heading down the mountain and had to back up a ways to let him by. Then the Jeeps had caught up to us. So we let them go by too. They all happend to be from Salem also and we knew some of the same people.
Val recomended that we air down a little. So we went down to 10lbs. After that the snow was'nt much of a problem, until it started getting deeper.

We still were making progress up and decided to just keep going. About the 1 mile mark we ran back into the Jeep group. They had come to the point of no more tracks and had stopped to play with there Nylints. Yes it seems EVERYONE has these things.

Well we thought this a good place to stop and play a litte too.

The Jeep guys had brought all there dogs with them. A couple goldens, a pit, and 2 shepard puppies.

The snow was a little deep here, bout 3 feet.

So we headed back down towards Blowout so we could get our tree.

Did'nt get into any snow on Blowout, but we only went about 7 miles up also. Got our tree and made a B-line back to Salem. I want to say thanks to Val for going with us and it was a fun, although short, day.

nice pics greg! i was stuck in the shop all day saturday while i watched the snow fall up here.

those are some nice pics, looks like it was a good time. I cant wait for snow to start layin down on the ground around here.

You really get used to it, and from the sights of the trees, and driving through some deep snow is well worth it ;)

Looks like fun & great scenery! I think I've only been in snow that deep once in my life!

oh im sure the scenery is great but I doubt I could enjoy it during the convulsions :P
