I am considering running my sami in the Vegas to Reno offroad race in the BITD series this coming year, and a couple other events. To say the least I will be lacking in the power department due to requirement to run a motor that came in them originally.
so my question is this....how much can i squeeze outta my little 1.6???
how much have you seen??
thanks in advance for the info.!

If your budget is in the high range, go for the gusto. Turbo! you dont have to build, the engine as hardcore if you keep the PSI under 10 psi.

Have a hunt around for some of the turbo stuff Wildgoody has posted and also check out some of the stuff by Zaggy on naturally aspirated engines.

First problem would be that the 1.6 never came in a Samurai. :) 1.3 liter only! As far as power goes, I have an engine that Reynolds built for me years ago that will pull the front end off the ground during times I've taken it circle track racing. And that's with 35 inch swampers and D44 axles. So, if you kept the rig light, I think you could go really fast.
Do you have to run pump gas?
Please keep us informed on you build and racing. That desert racing looks really enjoyable and I hope to 'do' one of those races soon.

Ahhhh ha.....my first snag...down to the 1.3 now! No big deal I guess. But the turbo is a no go. Naturally aspirated engines only. Kind of a killer. Right now the rig is very light it only a shell. the rear floor is gone along with all body metal short of the outer quarter panel skin. This is proving to be a great project. I'll get some pics up if I ever get a camera that doesnt suck! hahah
Thanks for the help.

A couple vendors sell 1.6L adapters for a Samurai. It's pretty easy and not to costy. If you have a couple bucks, the 2.0L would be the way to go.

A guy in the UK races a 413 pick up in Safari comp events, his biggest problem now is bent axles. I would just do a mild tune on the engine and then concentrate on getting the rest of it reliable.
I had a look on Google, this is a 500 mile race? thats a tough challenge.
