2.0 Liter Vitara motor swap in 1st Gen Tracker/Sidekick....bye, bye 1.6 liter!!!
I have been teasing a few of you about swapping the 1999 on up 2.0 liter Vitara/Tracker motor into a 1st generation Tracker/Sidekick for a few weeks and have finally started the write up on it.
Here is a link to the beginning of the write up:

The write-up will have to be written up as I can get it done. There is quite a bit of info to go over and lots of pictures. Most of your questions will be answered by reading the completed the write-up. The write up will be UPDATED DAILY.

would you say that someone could tackle this swap in their garage? (with your kit if you release some type of kit that is ;D) what type of special tools would somebody need? and if you dont mind me asking what would be a ballpark price tag assuming you have checked around for a 2.0 just the average price at a junkyard that you have found, we would pay for everything? ;) sorry for the long winded ? just very interested thats all!!!!

Tracker/Vitara 2.0 liters range from as low as $500 for a raw longblock up to quadruple that depending on how low the mileage is and what you get with the motor which you will need like the intake, exhaust, all sensors, mass-air, air box, alternator, starter, p/s pump, wiring harness, ECM, etc.).
Yes, I would definately say that someone with an engine hoist and a good tool set could swap the 2.0 into a Tracker in their garage. All the hardest parts of the swap are making the motor mounts and converting the 2.0 liter harness which is about twice as complicated as the 1.6 harness:

The indestructable motor mounts I built for the installation are simple to bolt-on and align and the wiring is simple to install and connect in once it is modified properly. There is also a custom flywheel and custom pilot bushing that are also necessary. There are plenty of other complications with the swap, but I will show how to overcome them during the course of the write-up.
Hopefully that answers most of your questions.

Yep, you are just too impatient! LOL!
I had several of the pages typed up with the pic's and my 5 year old accidentally deleted it. It was late and I evidentally forgot to save it in Front Page :(
Anyway, it is coming in installments and should be completed by the weekend.

Looking good :) Would the electric fan have fitted in front of the radiator?

Yes, but then the A/C condenser would definately not have fit. In the future he wants his A/C to be reinstalled, but for now he is a student that is out of $$$.

Hey Sean,
What made you choose the 2.0L over say, a 2.5 or 2.7 V6?
-
Nice job!! ,
who make the custom flywheel and pilot bushing?? and how much $$,
i'm planning to do this swap into my buggy with a samurai tranny...
-
I'm in the process of performing a similar transplant (1999 2.0 into a 1994 Sidekick) and I'm very interested in the completed writeup. Any hint as to when the remaining pages might appear?
Thanx

;D I take it headers are not available for this setup --- yet?
-
2.0 headers are available from suzisport out of australia. Speaking of 2.0's, I'm still waiting on Shrockworks to make some of those sexy bumpers for my '99.
-
Any more progress to report?
-
Yes updates Please. :)
Is there room to retain the 2.0l viscous fan? 3.5" sounds a little close.
-
OK, after about a month I have come to the conclusion that there is no way I will be able to pull the pic's off of the corrupted hard drive, which is what has been delaying the finish of the write-up. I apologize for this delay and assure everyone that the write-up will be finished as soon as possible.......just without as many detailed pic's.

Hello,
I am considering the same swap to a 2.0 litre engine, however, I have a 97 Siddekick Sport with a 1.8 litre engine. From what I understand the swap is more straightforward in the sence that the engives are very similar. Can anyone confirm this or have any experience with this?
Thanks!

As far as I know the 2.0 is just a bored out 1.8.
-
Acutally the bore is the same but the stoke is different.
