Title: 8valve and 16 valve clutch questions.

Well its been a while since I posted but I have a couple questions. I have since dismantled my wheeling tracker due to rust taking over. I bought a rust free one with a blown motor and put my motor in it. My first one was an auto and the new one is a stick. While I had the motor out I did the rear main seal and the clutch. However, I didnt purchase the clutch my gf's father did. I am pretty sure he just said geo tracker. Not geo tracker 16v. I guess my question is would the 8v clutch actually work on the 16v motor? the problem im having is the thing grinds every gear 1st through 5th and reverse. I changed the cable and fluid and adjusted it still no difference. I just have a hard time that all the snychros are gone. Any help is appreciated as always thanks, Andrew

my online ordering system shows 2 different part #s for the clutch its. the difference being diameter of the clutch - 8 valve is 7 7/8" and 16 valve 8 1/2". where they take this measurement from i dont know. so if the clutch is for an 8 valve it wont work with a 16 valve flywheel.

Your pilot bearing could be toast, I had one that only lasted four days !

The fact that it did it from day one is what baffles me......but I guess the only way to tell is to pull the tranny, I just didnt think the probability of every synchro in the tranny being gone was that good. Plus I didnt see any brass in the fluid when I changed it.

It sounds like to me the clutch cable isn't adjusted properly.
It is correct that the clutch diameters are different for the 8V and 16V engines....whether they will work properly when interchanged.....I don't know.

I thought the same thing, and I bought a new cable, and adjusted it within factory spec. So That rules that out. I dont really know what to do. Thanks, Andrew

I'd still check the cable and or the adjustment again. I have had MANY bad NEW cables.

When ordering the clutches there is a difference between the clutch disc diameters, but there is NO DIFFERENCE in the flywheels. When Suzuki switched from the 1.6 8 valve and the 1.6 16 valve the also started putting them in the 4-door models and they increased the clutch surface area bringing it closer to the mounting holes. This gives it more holding power than before so for heavy duty applications order a 4-door 1.6 16 valve model clutch and bolt it on your 2-door. This is exactly what we did with the 2.0 liter swap so it would have much more holding power.

Good to know.  I wasn't for sure on the flywheels.

So if I read this right. An 8 valve clutch will work with a 16 valve motor? I still dont understand why Im having the grinding. I have adjusted the clutch to all extremes.....i really dont want to have to pull the tranny.

i checked the chiltons manual and it says the clutch is almost exactly the same between the trackers, sidekicks, sidekick sports, and sammis.  check the flywheel for warpage, check for a warped clutch disc or damaged clutch damper hub, or check for a loose or damaged clutch pressure plate.  or your synchronizers are worn or the synchronizer sliding sleeve is worn. also the gear engagement dogs may also be worn.
