i stuck a k&n air filter right on the end of the intake, works awesome

i am novice. so bare with me.  calmini sells one for about 100.  blue tube deal with a filter on the end.  it replaces the factory enclosed box air filter.

If you don't have any additional mods,
like a header, cam or cat back exhaust
you won't get much if anything but more
noise from an intake mod like this

yea thats a good point, a header and exhaust are the biggest upgrade that a guy could do in his drive way with hand tools.

sorry, but cat-back?  don't laff, but is this what you do when make the stock bigger.  like 2" out the back?  i don't want loud muffler.  just all the help i can get on horsepower

Cat back is the exhaust mod that changes out the
stock 1 3/8" pipe to a 2" pipe after the Catolitic (sp)
convertor, this helps the engine breathe and flow
more fuel/air for more power. The filter won't help
if the engine can't get rid of more extaust.

see i know more than i think.  i'm gonna wait on the cat-back until after i put on 3" calmini body lift.  is this the correct thought process on that move?

No order of importance, one doesn't
affect the other

will i see much difference with a exhaust system and better air intake?

You might see a 10% increase,
which is like 5-6 HP, not huge, but
it is a noticable difference.

Yes you will notice the difference. I have a Calmini cam, ported head (plus milled .010), throttle body spacer, hi-flo air cleaner, Calmini header and 2" exhaust.  Seat of the pants dyno says it has more power but it is still sluggish over 65-70mph (with 235 ATs on)...having said that, this engine is newly rebuilt and I haven't had the opportunity to really open it up yet...plus the road conditions for the past week have been real crap here in Alberta.

if you just stick a k&n filter on the end will that mess the electronic stuff you mess up on the factory air filter?

Hi, I figured i'd thow my 2 cents in. air intake won't really do anything even with proper muffler action. I did notice some gains with my mid range torque cam and also i installed an underdrive pulley that I got on ebay, it was about 35.00$ and definetly gave me some more power. Thats what I noticed, I guess everyone will have different results.

I've been considering getting one of those as well...

But for some REAL power...my neighbor is trying to talk me into a 4.3L Vortec hot rodded up to around 300 ponies..he's got a few cores and all the parts to build one...I keep thinking that would be a great engine for a 4DR SAS project  ;D

Also he's all into building a 2WD V8 Track/Kick for the strip as well. He's got a couple of cores and enough parts to build up a 450HP+ Chev 350...plus a Ford 9" and my choice of a Turbo 350 or R700 tranny...where's a shell when I need one ;)  Oh...his current toy is a 72 Datsun 240Z , 377 stroker over 450 HP, street legal in the mid 10's...he's building up a 421 stroker that will be in excess of 550HP...wants to get into the 9's...so my little 80HP 1.6L certainly pales in his shop ;)
