Title: anybody using smaller than 6000lb winches??
Post by: bzzr2 on December 19, 2006, 09:06:15 AM
i'm wondering how well i'd do with a MileMarker PE4500 http://www.milemarker.com/PE4500.html ?apparently my tracker weighs in around 2800lbs.  anybody use this winch before?  also curious about mounting without adding a winch bumper, looking for pics..  i have only removed the bumper covers and will not be adding a bumper.  i don't see the weight or prettiness being required!

i've decided to go this route since nobody makes a locker for my year of tracker and it's less than 1/2 the price anyway (for ARB that is - it's a DD)

thanks - B

I wouldn't advice less than 8000lbs, the rating is usually a rolling load (ie not stuck!). Even with an 8000lbs I have had to double back the cable when winching up a sharp incline.

I wouldnt go with that winch, its not big enough to be used right.
This is what most of the people i wheel with are using, im thinking about getting one for my rig soon.  You can find them other places for 400 bucks, but i have seen this winch pull people non stop for hours and never even make a bad noise.

What about a 2" receiver front and rear welded right into the frame, and have a quick electrical plug in for your winch mounted on a thick plate, and 2" tube....

the receiver front and back idea was what i've been thinking for some time actually.  i'm not sure what the final plan will be - money will determine, also updgrading suspension again so bucks also going there..

Actually I have been running a milemarker e3000 on the front of my silver Tracker and has worked great for me. I did manage to break the cable once, but that was my fault for shock-loading it while it was stretched over a sharp rock ::). It's not very fast, but it does get the job done. I don't know if I would trust the stock bumper to mount anything to, it's just body thickness steel and is only held on by 2 10mm bolts per side...

interesting..  do you use a snatch block with it or just straight pull most of the time?  i wouldn't actually mount it to the bumper, somehow in behind it or make a plate that attaches to the frame then goes over top..

Wow how much does your rig weigh? I use an 8000lb winch and it would winch my old 5600lb (trail weight) Trooper verticle. I'm guessing it would rip my Sammy in half if I gave it a chance.

I use the 4500 milemarker on my 85 sami (lift & 31's) it works just fine with no snatch block, even pulled da tub's 4 dr up a decent hill but it took a little while. My sami is 2400 lbs and most winch companys recommend a winch that is double the vehicle weight or more. I bought this one because it's only 60 lbs vs. 80 or 90lbs of a 8000 or 9000lbs winch.

 My .02
P.S. I've had this for just over a year now and it's still working like new.

 Steve. :)

the light weight is one of the factors i'm looking at also, glad to hear your happy with your 4500.  does it tend to pull slow compared to the bigger winches most of the time?  i'm not overly concerned with speed in the long run, dependability is most important.

It isn't that heavy, but mud up to the axles adds a lot of drag.

looks ok, i've never heard of the name brand "Chicago Electric.." before, anybody out there using one of these 5500lb winches?  the price sure is right!  not overly heavy either.

This winch had a very positive write-up in JP Mag a couple of years ago.  It has a Series Wound Motor.  A search of the forums returned only positive reports.  Much higher quality than the HF.

I use a warn 2.5 or 2500 on my zuk. I was stuck in gumbo mud at our hunting lease and hooked up to a bush and winched myself out 20 ft like it wasn't even stuck. Check out the pic

I PULLED A 2005 ESCALADE BURRIED TO ITS AXLES IN DRY SAND 20 FEET BACK TO THE ROAD.
USED MY 6000 WARN.  HIS BUDDIES SAID NO WAY THAT SAMMI HAS THE BALLS TO DO IT.
USING THE WINCH THE SAMMI IS JUST AN ANCHOR. HIS GIRLFRIEND MUST HAVE TAKEN A DOZEN PICS OF ME DOING THIS .

thanks for all the input guys.  i'm still leaning towards the 4500 milemarker since a lot of others seem to be happy with the smaller winches being used out there, and the weight is right.  i'll dig up this post later on when i actually get something mounted.   speaking of pics, does anybody have pic of winches mounted without winch bumpers?

Watch for line speed on the smaller winches. Some of them get the weight rating from gearing not hp. I figure if I want gearing thats essentially what a snatch block is. I am going to put this M4000 on my new rig.

(EDIT FOR BAD LINK)sorry

http://www.warn.com/atv/winches/40ci_winch.shtml

I was looking at line speed and it seems to be the fastest I can find for the winch weight. I plan to switch to synthetic rope and a plastic fairlead to lighten it even more. Im guessing total weight to be about 17lbs.

interesting..  i obviously don't know a whole lot about winches except what i am looking for.  the gear ratio on the milemarker 4500 is 294:1 & hp is 1.9hp.  is this a potential problem/weakness with a small winch?  i don't want to buy junk, but it has to be light and affordable.  i really hate having a budget......

I ran a Warn 5000 for about 8 years with no problems at all!  If I felt like It was too heave I would just snatch block it and it would still work great!  I just removed it and gave it to my buddy because I am tired of pulling EVERYONE out.  I never used it for my self so I figured I would just pass the Legacy on!!!!

There ya go right there, thats is the biggest down side to having a winch.  The second someone gets stuck, your number is dialed or your name is yelled.
Happens everytime, only thing to do is charg em hahah.

Sorry for the bad link guys. This was the winch I was talking about.

http://www.warn.com/atv/winches/40ci_winch.shtml

Ive seen these on ebay for $380 new in the box

line speed of 136 to 1

also make sure to get a winch with a mechanical brake.

As far as pulling anybody out... when they see the size of this winch they wont want your help! ;D

wow, that is a small winch, really light!  the performance specs look are really similar to the milemarker i've been looking at but the warn is just so much lighter.   smaller dimensions too, hhhmmm.  thanks!
