Title: What gears to run
Post by: paps133 on January 10, 2005, 06:17:23 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m in need or some help, so I figured what a better place to pick some peoples brain. ;D ;D

OK first thing I need to know is, I wanted to run 33 or 32 on my 1995 geo tracker, 2door 5 speed.  This is my  daily driver, I would like to be able to reach speeds of (70 mph or 115km) in 5th gear, without having to push my engine to 5,000RPM’S.  ;) ;)

I’ve been told 5.12 would be fine, but I’ve also been told 5.83. This is where I need help. What gears would I need in-order to run these tires, to keep my highway speeds? ??? ???

Another thing, I’ve also wanted top know, what are the stock gears (ring & pinion) in the older tracker 89 to 94. Could they be use for bigger tires on my 95 ??? ???

Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated

Thanks Pierre

Older Track/Kicks had either 5.12's or higher (lower number) ratios.

I run 5.83's and 31 X 10.50's on my 95 2-door Kick, and it's just right on the highway - well, it DOES have trouble with hills a bit, but on reasonably flat highway, 65 MPH is not a problem.

If you're running bigger tires, you'l have somewhat more issues.

BTW, on my rig, the speedo is dead on with my gear/tire combination (Goodyear Wrangler MTR's)

I believe Sidekick/Trackers came with the following ratios.  Feel free to correct me if I am wrong

4.30:1
4.62:1
4.88:1
5.12:1
5.38:1
5.62:1

Kind of a wide range of options to guess from.

32-33's I would definately do 5.83's. If not you will end up never using 5th gear. With 5.83 and 33's I can run 70-75 all day except on the big hills.

Hi everybody,
While searching web about ring-pinion gears, i noticed this forum and some threads inside.
One of the useful thread (for me) was this.
I'd like to run 30" tyres instead of 195/80R15 stock tyres outside diameter of 27,28" on my 3 door hard top  manual transmission 1,6lt 16v '98 Vitara JLX. I guess the stock ring-pinion set is 5,12:1 and it seems ok to use them with 30", right?
If i should have to lower the ratio i think i'd prefer 5,62:1 ratio. Does anyone know which Suzuki models use this ratio as stock?

5.83 seems to be the gear ratio of choice for tires that size.I don't know if you could find yhem in another vehicle, but Calmini sells them and I am sure others do as well.mabey Trail Tough, but not positive.

Thanks for your reply kingzoo,
I can find calmini 5,83:1 r&p set but i don't think that the exact ratio i'd need for 30" tyres is 5,83:1
5,62:1 will be better. At some posts that i've read, it is mentioned that 5,62:1 has been used as stock r&p ratio on early '90's 5 door models. I think a stock one will cost less beans  :)

5.62s were stock only in early 89 model 1.3L Track/Kicks.  5.38s were stock in early 8 valve 4 door Track/Kicks.

i would say for sure go lower than 5:12 i run 32"s and i cant pass joggers, my sollution is to divorce the case and install a samurai case with 4:1's or 6.5:1's that way ill get my high range reduction as well as low range unlike the trackick type plus the sami gear sets are cheaper
