I am looking at a 1993 Pontiac Sunrunner w/auto for a great price, but I'd like to run 31's. Will the stock gearing and 31's be drivable for a bit or will it not even roll under it's own power? I can swap 3rds out at a later date, but would rather put the money into a small spacer lift, a set of tires and rims and a rear locker first and foremost. The plan would be to eventually do a SAS using a samurai front axle to run no more than 31's. The reason I don't want to run a smaller tire right away is because I don't want to buy new tires twice.
aaaaanyways, back to my original question, 31's with an auto, stock gearing yay or nay? Not much highway driving at the moment but at some time in the next while I will need to make an 800km trip. I can handle driving slow, but don't want to burn the tranny out.
thanks!

It will drive but be real slow to get moving. You'll also have to really keep your foot in it on long hills. Your fuel milage will suffer as well. Find some gears from a manual to slap in it.

you shouldnt have a problem driving around town with the 31's. but out on the highway you wont be able to keep up to traffic.
when i had 29" tires and stock gearing, i would pretty much have to have it floored to do 110 km/h on the flat, but now that i switched gearing, and went up to 30" tires, i have no problem at all. you wouldnt believe the difference it made.

Like I said I won't be doing much highway driving for a while, but I also don't know how soon I'd want to go to the hassle of finding/buying new 3rds and swapping them in.
I always find the auto to be sluggish as hell anyways--my mom has a '94 sidekick w/auto and every time I drive it I feel like I need to keep it matted to keep momentum up, feels like theres a crazy amount of drag in the drivetrain.

go for it i have a 93 sunrunner with 31s and i drive on the highway with no problem

but is it an auto or stick?

Look for 5.13s out of a stick. Had 31s on mine and it was aturd,I found a set of 5.13s at a boneyard for $150 well worth it.

yeah I know it'll be slow, but will it be drivable for a while? Maybe a better course of action would be to do the coil spacers, new rear shocks and strut mount flip and hold off on the locker for a bit, and spend that money on near 3rds. How much should I be paying for a set of 3rd members from a junkyard?

Hi trail-worker :)
Does not look like you are getting any straight answers at the moment ???
Guys in my club ( Zuk club - 63 members ), run the auto's with 31's. You will be fine for a while. Acceleration is compromised in high range but the auto helps heaps in low range - this is where auto's and larger tyres work quite well. BUT: without gearing changes the moter will struggle when there is heaps of traction.
If it was me I would go for it ;)
Hope this helps.

great, thanks for the info! I'm going to go take a closer look in a few days since it's christmas madness right now..it's a 1993 sunrunner 2dr, auto tranny with 220 000 km on it. that's around 100 000miles or somethign I guess? Price is $1800 canadian dollars but I should be able to get that down to around 1500-1600 with a little bargaining..
so what should I be looking at paying for a set of 5.12 3rd members?
thanks again!

I paid $150 for my front(whole housing + 3rd), and i paid $220 for my rear 3rd (including a lock rite locker)
i think $150 is the average for the front. but the rear is usualy alot cheaper.
i believe the 89-95 had 22 spline front 3rd, and the 96+ had 26 spline. plus the rears had a ABS sensor plug and ring inside the 3rd after 92.
I changed to the 26 spline 3rd in the front of my sidekick, the auto wreckers gave me the right axle that goes along with it.
oh and these were win canadian prices, hope it helps.
another good thing to do would be to upgrade the brakes to the 4dr ones, they will help alot with the larger tires.

I live on the sunshine coast, too bad because I just bought a J**P, sorry guys :(
after a year of lurking on zukiworld and planning what I'd do to a trackick if I bought one, I was offered a deal I just couldn't pass up on this Jeep, I got it for $5500 off the sticker price..1990 XJ in showroom condition with 163 000km for $1500..one elderly owner, I really couldn't pass it up.
BUT! don't worry, theres still zooks in my family because my mom has a sidekick which I still wheel all the places I shouldn't when I come visit :)
Maybe if I can score a sweeet deal on a trackick I can build a trail-only rig and use the cherokee to tow it :D
NOTHING will ever wheel like a ZUK! Only at this time I need something a little bigger and powerfull as a DD because I sometimes drive 1600km round trip over a weekend when I go from Nelson t o the sunshine coast..

where do you live on the sunshine coast? i was just in powell river over the weekend. seen some really sweet trackers there. wish i brought my camera.

I live in gibsons, the lower coast closer to vancouver. Well, I don't really live here I grew up here and am just visiting my folks for part of the winter before I start work in Nelson again next spring.

I have had 2 kicks w/ auto trans and 31's about 4 years of driving plus between the 2. Drive on the highway 5 days a week 50 miles to and from work. Cruse around 75 t0 80mph no problems. acouple minor mods to the engine and the fuel milage sucks but what the hell love them kicks. let me know if you need any more info.
